VRT - extras

Hi, i have to pay my VRT on my Z4 this week. For those of you who don't know what VRT is let me explain how unpleasant our (Ireland's) government are.

I bought my car in the UK a few weeks ago and brought it back to Ireland. Every individual who brings imports a car into Ireland has to pay VRT (vehicle registration tax). The tax is calculated and based on the original selling price of the car in Ireland along with the emissions the car produces. I have to pay €7501 vrt just to simply swap the English plates on the car for Irish number plates. However i may have to pay even more on top of the €7501 once the customs inspect my car when i bring it to them.

They look for any extra's that are added to the car and increase your vrt for each extra they find. This tax that is forced upon by our government is completely illegal and the EU fine Ireland millions upon billions of euro each year BUT the Irish government make four times more than what they are fined.

I need some help from 3.0l owners (i have a 2003 manual 3.0l) - i need to know what extras are on my car. I have listed a few components that i think might be extras but maybe you can correct me if they are standard.

Are the following components extra's on the 3.0l manual:

- leather seats
- electric memory seats
- electric mirrors (with that fold button to bring the mirrors in)

anything else that you might think might be extras could you kindly list them (i don't have sat nav or big rims) - my car looks exactly like the one on the top of the page (in the banner - i have those exact wheels)

thanks to all in advance

mines a 2004 and doesn't have leccy mirrors

also check what seats you have - are the sports?

think leather was standard but I may be wrong...

don't know about memory seats

It depends which model you have.

On my 3.0si Sport model the seats (leather & memory) were standard. The mirrors were definitely extra and cost £160 from new.

Best way to confirm all of this for your model, and gather proof for the autorities, is to go to the BMW UK website which has a "build your own" section. This clearly shows the parts that are extra and which aren't.

Go to, http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/homepage/

Click on Z4 at the top left of the page. The drop-down lets you pick Z4 Roadster or Coupe

Then clck on "Build your own BMW" which is at the bottom of the page third box along

You will see what is standard and what is optional.

I have the 2003/4 brochure on my desk.
for the 3.0i SE
Standard
Electric seat adjustment
Oregon leather seats

Extra
Mirrors 'exterior mirror package' was an option

Any more - ask away as it's 4 sides of close typed options/standard items

don't the options change with model year though - so build your own wont be definitive for a 2003 car?

Spot on - hence why I've opted to quote from the correct 2003/4 brochure. Even that has limitation if it was a model outside the brochure range. The ultimate answer has to be the BMW build sheet in conjunction with BMW UK information on the car.

The VRT is based on the original selling price of the car. :o So if you buy a ten years old car you pay the tax based on the original price?

Ouch! I thought our government had loads of money making schemes

It is very similar to the situation importing a car in Greece on your own.

To my understanding, the tax to be paid is also related with the original invoice of the seller if it is written on the invoice such items individually so they are considered as extras.

If it is a used car, it is also related to the price paid (invoice), its age and emissions level as you said.

If you check out parkers.co.uk you can build up your extras on any MY car you like via check boxes and it lists the added cost of all the options. I did this for mine and it has nearly £4k worth of extras. Definitely worth a look.
