Volvo stop start

Never been a great fan of stop start, but have it on a Volvo V40 hire car.

Joined a traffic jam yesterday and ok it's 35c external temp, but the system shuts down as ' temperature above operating parameter'. Each time the car gets back to full speed on a motorway or main road it works again (like I need it then..). So I sat for 30 mins engaging 1st moving, etc. when stop start would have been perfect..

I understand need to keep the engine cool, but somewhat pointless that at each time I slow the system deactivates...lol

Not many 35c days in the Swedish test labs ...

The Audi I have works ok, not when really cold though. The Porsche - I switch off ...

It's always concerned me that the extra wear on the battery & starter motor will cause issues in the longer term - not that manufacturers are worried about that as long as it's OK for the life of the warranty...

In our F25, I've programmed the stop/start system to remember the last setting used - which is, IMO, how it should be set when it leaves the factory...

I think they have separate batteries and these days pre engaged starters don't wear as much as the older types.
Agree though - something else that will need fixing post warranty, but gets mpg down for emissions and sales..

My Audi is over 5.5 years old on the original battery, so it does not seem to have impacted it there at least.

Likewise by 118d just over 5 years old with 83K, no hint of trouble with either starter or battery.

I think it depends on the sort of driving you do - Cindy had a 1er as a lease car when she was working as a District Nurse so she was doing the vast majority of her mileage around town, which is just where the auto stop/start is supposed to be most beneficial. The battery was knackered within 2 years and replaced under warranty and the starter was very rattley. The auto Stop/Start also disabled itself during the winter due to the cold weather and the battery not being at 90%+ charge.

At the end of that lease, she replaced it with a LCI 1-series and we turned off the auto start/stop right from the start and didn't have a single problem.

YMMV....
