Volvo C30 D5 (yes, you read "Volvo")......

Decided the time has come for a new car as the 20-22mpg my 35k mile 3.0 auto does is absolutely killing me and the car is getting on a bit now, so I have decided to opt for a new car.

Looking to spend somewhere between 15-20k and want something cheap to run, sporty, sound from a residual point of view and good looking. Considered a number of cars to date and I keep coming back to the Volvo C30 for it blend of looks, economy and value. 41mpg on the combined cycle is getting me very very excited!!

Having had one planted on my backside last week I have to say I am impressed not only with its perfomance but also its looks, the thing looked very menacing tailing me on the M60. The car I am considering is very much like this one and is blessed with 180bhp and 360nm torque in standard form. The equipment levels are also very good whilst the sound systems makes my std Z4 unit sound tiny and cheap. Here is what the car I may opt for looks like....

The other thing that appeal is the "chipability" of the thing with 210bhp and 450nm of torque gained from a £500 spend.

I would be grateful for constructive comments on the above and indeed any past experiences with the C30 that forums members may have had? Anyone any expericne of tuning TD engines and is the said gain a realistic (and safe) bet?

Cheers all!

I like them, a mate has a V50 and it's very well screwed together. FWD and torque steer, not sure if it's a big problem or not?

The only watch-out when chipping a diesel is whether the transmission can take it or not.

If you look at a lot of manufacturer power curves you'll see they ramp up to their max quite quickly, but stay flat across most of the rev range. The 're-chip' will remove this artificial ceiling and give you lots of torque. However, the ceiling is not just their for the sake of it, it's to protect the transmission from wads of torque.

The extra 30bhp shouldn't affect anything except performance.

I liked the V50's and I thought the C designation was usually a drophead like the C70? It must mean coupe now. It's a cute little thing anyway.

The original C70 was available as both a cabrio or coupé - the later one was a folding hardtop - same as the change for the Z4s.

I never saw the C70 as a coupe, only the convertible model, the salesman tried his darndest to put me in one but I needed the XC70 to haul my dogs and stuff around.

I hope the little C30 is as solid as my XC's were. They are a bit small for our market and I think they are just starting to show up here.

I'm a big fan of the C30, think it looks pretty good with the decent Volvo alloys and the subtle bodykit available on them. Not sure for certain, but I think the T5 petrol version is basically a Focus ST (as said earlier) - same engine, etc - but in IMO a better looking body with a slightly different state of tune. Handling apparently is OKish as standard but I've read a set of Eibachs on them works wonders.

Suppose I just like them because they're a bit different!

Deffo on the right tracks there, the D5 engine is awesome for a diesel, i had an S60 D5 and it would do 50+mpg all day long and was the comfiest car with the best sound system iv ever owned.

I like those C30's from the front and side but really the back is unforgivable, i would threrefor look at the S40 D5 as its the same platform as the C30 but much better looking.

Make sure you get one with the dolby stereo, it really is very good.

not my cup of tea however its probably a great car. i like all angles but the rear, i think the lights are a bit big..

im sure you will enjoy it though, especially with the roof down......................................... :poke:

Keep the Z4 for the weekends and get a Shed imo :)

For only 6 grand you can get:
Seat Ibiza Mk4 Cupra Diesel -> 160bhp (190Remapped), 50-60mpg (seriously!), 312mm 4-pot AP Brakes, FMIC etc.

And if that looses over £500 after 1 year and 12k miles id be VERY surprised!!

Although there's no hope of getting 50-60mpg from one of those Ibiza's...

I owned an Ibiza Cupra TDI before my Z4. Over almost 2 years and 18k miles I averaged 45mpg in the Ibiza. For the same driving in my 3.0i Z4 I've averaged a fraction over 30pmg so far. Significantly better than the Z4, but if I was changing to a diesel for economy purposes, I'd be looking at something that does better mpg. A Fabia vRS is largely the same car as the Ibiza but has different (longer) gearing and less power - my wife's is currently returning 55mpg average over the last 5k miles.

Mine did!? Although it had a very good remap on. Managed 48mpg (Pump calculated) on a 3200mile euro-jaunt where speeds of over 100 leptons were very common...

Anywhoo, i just suggested it as a nice compromise between Power (14.8 1/4 mile without the spare wheel ;) ), Efficiency and residual values. My Ibiza lost £700 after 2 years and 25000 miles, although i did tweak it somewhat!

Mine must've been broken!

That was mine calculated manually, standard car (well, as far as I know). Even on a stupidly quick flat out blast trying to keep up with some tuned Civic Type R's I didn't manage to get the mpg lower than 36mpg though! Perhaps it was because I was largely doing short runs at the time which aren't great with diesels.

Still a better proposition than the Volvo C30 :driving:
