Vinyl wrap to match interior black rubberised finish

Hi guys,

I have searched so sorry if it’s posted somewhere deep in the depths of this forum.

My centre console under handbrake and steering wheel have started to wear losing that black rubberised finish, I’ve looked at plasti dip, but I think putting a matte black wrap on would be the best for wear!

So here lyes my question: has anyone managed to match that finish to a particular wrap, they are all online so I dont want to order some and it be so far off a match as I’d like it to match the rest of the plastics.

Thanks for your help all!

Gav

K2 or plasti dip do rubberised paint.
Not used personally so can’t vouch for finish but might be worth a go.

On small intricate items I'd recommend paint. The time and energy to wrap in detailed areas is a right PITA!
Maybe the durability would be better with vinyl, but don't think the finish would be as good. Maybe order a small piece and give it a go if you want? :)

Yeah I was looking to plasti dip it, seems to be a faff to get hold of the legit stuff. Just didn’t know how close in colour and texture would be to standard

Bear in mind plasti-dip isn't designed for constant handling so it's not going to last long on something your hands are going to be making regular contact with before it starts peeling or breaking down.

How about this? https://www.colorbondpaint.com/products/l-v-hp-refinisher-bmw

Not sure where in UK you could buy it from.

Yeah I saw that stuff would like to find out more about it.

I agree mjennings23 I think it would just fall to bits on the steering wheel trim, I know you can get a clear core for plasti dip inside if it would help

This eBay seller (plastidipuk) sells it, but it's out of stock: https://ebay.us/kzSRmx
Actually if you wanted to wrap it, it shouldn't be too hard, but you won't get the perfect match. The paint will be better.

There’s a chic who owns a Z4 in Kent, part of the z4roadster.org group who professionally wraps - Kat - nice lass

Know she’d do a professional job at a good price if you’re interested

My Z4M's steering wheel had been wrapped with carbon vinyl in the past, which I'm not a fan of, so I re-wrapped it a couple of weeks ago to return it to the standard look. I used 3M 2080 M12 matte black vinyl and it's pretty much a perfect match.

I bought it here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273904901278 . I bought two sheets of 20x30 cm at a total cost of £9.98 including postage.

That looks neat, 3m wrap of all types is good stuff but not always easy to find genuine stock

Thanks wonkydonkey! That does look tidy, I want to do the button surrounds too but that looks very fiddly considering I’ve never wrapped

You can probably see that I wrapped the large plastic trims on the steering wheel, but not the button surrounds. I might do something to those at some point, and that "something" might just involve replacing them!

I can say from experience that plastidip on the steering wheel will last all of 5 minutes.

I managed to find some soft touch lacquer which is similar to the original finish and holding up much better.

Would this be OK to use on the cup holder front plates as well?

I've given this a go today on the button surrounds OP. I used the 3M 2080 Matte Black vinyl and I would say it is the best colour match you'll find, looks nice and clean. However, I found it very difficult, particularly the inner steep edge of the covers. I'm not 100% happy with the results but thought it would be worth a try.

I suggest either my novice wrapping is to blame or it is a nigh on impossible shape to wrap. In which case you can get away with wrapping it well on the exposed sides and just doing the best you can on the interior steep edge (this is fairly hidden most of the time).

Apologies for the poor quality picture, this is just an instagram story chop up. Notice my terrible leather in need of a trip to royals and the unusual silver individual trims which were on the car when I got it; think it compliments things quite nicely though.

So just to update I decided to go with Matt black hycote as I already had some! It is very very good match the BMW soft touch finish I’m very surprised. I’m just going to make sure no keys get thrown under the handbrake!

What make was the Soft Touch Lacquer you used, and did you use plastic primer first?
