they've started pointing average cameras in both directions now :|

Yup, the plate has to be vertical or as close as possible as permitted by the car design and it has to be reflective - or something like that

there is a British standard on the reflective bit. which is probably where they all fall down legal wise.

I always thought vinyl plates were illegal, at the moment i'm not running a plate and i'm nervous about getting pulled...Had a few dodgy looks from the Panda cars...Spotted traffic last nite and deliberately went the long way home...Not sure i can be arsed with the issues!!
 
FWIW, I ran a reflective vinyl plate on the front of my westy for years with no issue:

The plate is supposed to be mounted vertically at the bottom of the nosecone, but they always catch on speedbumps there. I used a (slightly cut down) reflective backing and standard size letters on the front.
The rear had various different sized plates from standard car through vinyl, motorbike sized, and teeny tiny. Never got pulled for plates..
 
i had a reflective vinyl plate on the front of a celica i had,that was on the car for 3 yrs so 3 mot's with no problems :thumbsup:
 
my biggest issue is that i wanna be able to use it sometimes and not others, have wondered about getting maybe a magnetic plate that you can remove easily. Same size, but if you're in a situation where getting pulled would be a problem, would be easy to whack it on.

Interesting thats now 4 Zeds and counting without front plates, as long as Paddy gets his balls back ;)

My last car i stuck the plates on with velcro to make cleaning easier
 
yeah but then you've got velcro on it for when you don't want a plate.

i want metal behind the bumper so you can easily remove it for a clean look.
 
I'm sure someone in the US made a removable plate using brackets from underneath the front lip.

It has to be easy enough to fab up a couple of 90 degree stainless strips that hand tighten to captive nuts underneath the bumper and wrap up the front to hold the plate vertical. Remove when not needed and replace as needed.

Persoanlly I like the clean look, but can't do withe the hassle and giving the police some reason to pull me.
 
well the easy answer would be to get your plate and apply double-sided sticky tape to the back of it.....then sh*t the tape up til its not sticky any more.

All you need to do then is sling the plate under your seat, and if you get stopped, you just produce it as Exhibit 1 and in your most obseqious voice give it "...it fell off just down the road officer and I'll be putting it back soon as I get home...". :evil:
 
thats exactly what ive done & it's worked fine, but id like to be able to attach it properly for those occasions you really don't want the attention.

well they're ok on my 4x4 i suppose, but i guess you'd have to colour code 'em or something for the Zed... :evil:


Or maybe as someone has suggested (kind of) - I haven't checked out the amount of available flat space, but if you bonded a couple of bits of metal to the back of the bumper then used a flexible magnetic plate? They exist, I use ono my Ifor Williams....

Guess you'd almost need the plastic one with the "crap glue" so the policeman didnt wonder why the magnetic one wasnt on.
