As we are all aware- sixspeed doent run a front plate- I havent for a few weeks and have been worried for being pulled. I have now got the paper work for my private plate through and am going to put a front plate on andwas wondering how likley I am to get pulled over for a vianl front pplate?

the front of the number plate is effectively a sticker so a proper vinyl number plate is fine.

Best example i can think of is the jaguar e-type

whats a vinal plate?

he means vinyl plate.

One that's a sticker, so you stick it on the bonnet.

don't think it would look good

A few of the guys on the Corrado Forum had their front bumpers 'smoothed' (removing the recess the plate sites in) and just stuck the plate on the inside of their windscreen (on the dash).

Only one guy every got pulled for it, and that's because his had 'fallen off' and he wasn't actually displaying it, technically a plate inside the windscreen is legal. The best bit was he was actually pulled by a policeman on a horse!

Personally I wouldn't stick it to the bonnet, but he maybe talking about fixing it somewhere else on the front, I have contemplated the plate inside the windscreen though.

I dunno what they would look like, they will look quite different from the OEM holder, and without a mounted border I'm not sure it would look right. You can always selotape it there with the OEM holder removed and see what it looks like before sticking it down permanently.

Ironically I noticed my holder was lifting on one side at lunch time so I need to tighten him up.

most plates are just stuck on with double sided tape now anyway - i think it would look cleaner for sure. a Vinyl one would make cleaner loads easier to! i like the idea

most plates also have black borders, which this wouldn't have.

I think it would really depend on the colour of the car, a darker colour would suit this a lot better than a white plate stuck onto a lighter coloured or silver car. It's all about the aesthetics.

For example my signiture is a light colour, and on a light forum skin, so I added the black border.

i am sure there was some discussion about this somewhere - might not have been here though.

IIRC viynl type plates arent legal the old jags can do it as the plates adhere to the rules of the time. in the same way you cant have the old black background plates on new cars

Somewhere in the back of my mind is a requirement for the number plate to be displayed vertically on the front of the vehicle if provision was made by the manufacturer for such. Exceptions being cars with no obvious place (such as the E type) and imported vehicles not designed to accept UK sized plates.

It's not an MOT requirement as I have read the handbook.

Vinyl plates are perfectly legal. I had one on my front bumper as I didn't want to drill into it. As long as the font and spacing adhere to regs.

they are illegal as they arent reflective apparently- however the one i want to mount where the oem one goes goes have a thin black boarder- just think the look would be he best of both worlds- no big sick out plate but at least running one. Just dont want to attract unwanted plod attention.

I think you'd get away with that to be honest.

Cosmetically I think you'd want the border too , as you said.

As i have nothing else to do this evening and quite fancied one too..........

Road Vehicles Regulations 2001 is essentially what you are after if you want to get anal about it.

Apart from the bits everyone knows............

Yup, the plate has to be vertical or as close as possible as permitted by the car design and it has to be reflective - or something like that

there is a British standard on the reflective bit. which is probably where they all fall down legal wise.

ive had no front plate now for 4+ weeks and it's been fine, but I was pulled over twice in 24hrs (both near london, one was a roadblock for scooters and another was an unmarked 3 series on the m4).

I think it's ok if you're not doing anything else wrong, but if you are.. it's the catalyst that will get you into trouble.

I'd have to see a vinyl one, not sure it would look great ?

putting it in the windscreen doesn't look great either tho.

iive had no front one for about 4 weeks 2 andy and am worried it will be a catalyst like u say- the vinal one should look like a normal plate but at least be smoth to the front bumper.

Great idea, just take it off the dash when on the motorway.... so those low life speed camera loosers can't get you
