viewing z4 3.0si tomorrow

Going to view an 06 plate z4 3.0si convertible tomorrow I have read the buyers checklist on this forum is there anything else I need to look out for particularly on the 3.0si engine

Also how accurate is bmwvin.com as the seller has informed the vehicle has xenons but this does not appear on the options list but 502 headlight washer system is mentioned, I checked another vehicle that had xenons both 502 appeared and also 522 for xenons

Can someone explain what some of the not so obvious options mean

3.0si roadster - excellent choice.
Check if rear springs have been replaced, check roof motor works and operates smoothly. The engine will rattle a little on tick-over particularly if cold so don't worry yourself over that. Go for a long test drive to get the engine warmed up and then push it through the gears - should accelerate smoothly through all gears, push it to about 5000 rpm in each gear just to make sure.

Cheers!

The seller mentioned the roof motor has been replaced 1-2 years ago and when dropping the hood at the point the roof is fully enclosed in the rear the motor noise increases more than usual at this point is that normal

as far as he is aware the rear springs have not been replaced, could they be on there way out :?

On this forum i've read about vanos issues, DISA issues, oil leaks, on inspection is this is something I can check for?

All 3.0si have headlight washers as standard. Tbh I would trust the VIN check so I doubt it will have xenons. They won't be the first seller to state xenons on the ad when they're not actually fitted (think Bing's 3.0si was the same).

Yes the roof motor noise does increase slightly after it is fully retracted, like a louder whine - so don't worry on that one.
The rear springs on mine were replaced at 30k. I don't know what it feels like if they need replacing - all I know it that it is a common fault.
I would't concern yourself with Vanos DISA (other forum members may have something to say on that). As for oil leaks you can visually check after your test drive.

Some commonly missed checks -

* Turn the AC "max cooling" button on and check that the radiator fan comes on - £300 for a new fan pack or at least that amount of loom diagnostics if it doesn't
* Check for rattles from the rear under acceleration from low speeds - the welds on the exhaust almost always fail at some point. Cheap fix though
* Check for a loud "thunk" when changing from 1st to reverse (or vice versa). This is a dry diff seal - relatively common - which is a labour-intensive job to fix
* Agree with the above post re. the fast, rattly noise from the engine when it is cold - all N52s have this. If there is a slower metallic tap, I'd guess about 3 beats per second, then it could be a more serious HVA issue that would need investigation
* Check for any kind of hesitation or lack of smoothness in the throttle. There are so many reasons why this could happen, and while the fixes are often simple, it can be a laborious and expensive process to get to a resolution

Great choice though - overall, these are really reliable cars and pretty stunning value for money, second hand. Especially the 3.0si, if you can find a good one.

xenons are a must, if it turns out the vehicle does not have xenons I may walk away such a shame as i've been told the car is mint inside and out

:( I will physically check tomorrow, I presume the ignitor and ballast is within the headlight. I do hope it has xenons!

If there are two thumb wheels on the light switch it has halogens. One is for the instrument brightness, the other for halogen headlight height adjustment. Also xenons will have the yellow stickers under the bonnet on top of each headlight.

Well its your call regarding the xenons of course, however 3.0si roadsters are few and far between - if it ticks all the other boxes it may be worth compromising on the xenons.

I'll see how the viewing goes and take it from there, I think the xenons will set the car off nicely

Had my eyes on this but did not bid seems fully loaded with xenons! :) , surprised what it sold for!

In terms of the options the vehicle I am looking at tomorrow, is it pretty standard? anything special

going from your options list its well spec'd - Its the Si sport so it has the M sport multi-function steering wheel, M sport suspension (very hard BTW) and its got electric heated M sports seats. Also has a wind deflector too

Cheers Marlon, I've contacted the guy who has sold the one on ebay to check if it has definitely sold, if not I maybe interested in that...

I can't make sense of the low price the one on eBay went for (maybe its the black and yellow seats?) the mileage isn't exactly low but its not very high either ?
