Viewing a Z4 tomorrow - some advice?

Hi all,

I'm off to have my first test drive in a Z4 tomorrow, it's a 2003 3.0i (wanted at least a 04 but its a good price) 38,000 miles, FBMW service history, grey, 18" alloys, 2 owners and from a main dealer (AUDI) garage - priced at £10,500 with 3 month warranty.

Question is - I am trading in my 2005 S40 2.0SE D (which has communications pack & GSM integrated telephone - important to trade in price) and have ran a Glasses guide on my car which say's £8,541 for trade in in excellent cond (which it is). Now, the man at Audi said he could only give me the market value of my car on a trade in - so do you thinkk asking for the above price is reasonable?

Just would like some opinions on this - I won't pay more than I need to as prices seem to be falling quite rapidly now for Z4's & MX5's (been considering both) - but the price they are asking seems quite reasonable - you think?

price is fair but play hard ball- either work him up on the price he offers on your car or down on his. Or both if you can! He wants to sell as the market is flat!

Yip - I totally agree, prices are dropping very fast at the moment - I've looked at a couple of Z4's and a couple of Mx5's but haven't driven either yet. I know that the power is far superior in the Z4 but the MX5 is meant to be a great car to drive and for less money (around £9,500 now) your getting a 2.0i 2006 sub 20,000 mile and the running costs are significantly less (can you guess I'm trying to talk my-self in to it as the MX5 is the more sensible option!).

AND I think the Audi guy was up to some old shinanigans - I phoned him initially yesterday to see if the car was still available and then phoned him this morning to confirm a time for the test drive, he told me that I was "lucky" as someone had been to see the car but couldn't buy it because they had failed a credit check - think he is trying old tactics here? This is one of the biggest Audi dealerships in Europe, I don't think people who have bad credit ratings would bother going here! What do you think?

Your right- he is- go there in te mind set that there are many nice zs for sale and you are only driving away if you get a deal. BMW nearly lost me ovr £15 (I'm a stubborn bugger!)
As for the MX5 if you are trying to convince yourself then you know it's the wrong choice!

Good point!

Yip - I'm going in there head strong tomorrow. I bought an Audi TT roadster from them (actually from the same guy) about 3 years ago, they were absolutely terrible, worst service dept I've ever dealt with but the price of the Z4 is so good and you don't get as many deals like this up in Scotland as down south so it def worth a look.

i would be interested to see what they would offer my audt tt 03 plate.

not sure on mileage for yours,

but just a quick glass look up:
Volvo S40 SE
2.0TD Diesel 4-door Saloon
6 Speed Manual Front Wheel Drive
Year: 2005 55
Mileage: 30,000

Part-exchange Price:
Excellent condition:
£9140
Average condition:
£8240
Below average condition:
£7240

I recon they will say cost to change would be £4-5k from them

What do you mean cost to change? My mileage is 29,900 - so just about exact mileage but mine is a 05 not a 55 (but has the communications pack and GSM telephone). How did you get a quote - did you not have to pay? - I did!

cost to change = buying price - part ex price for yours....

Well if that's the case they can blow....what's the point in having a Glasses guide if you get half what it says? I want the full £8,500!!

I've been offered (twice) £7,500 for a couple of cars around the same price as the Z4 altough they didn't include the optional extras on their quote - 4-5k no way. Will see tomorrow I guess.

with the current market, i would put my money on that they would require £4-5k ontop with your car to change.

depressing i know, but you never know, you might strike lucky.

prices on the s40 on current market on autotrader start at high £7ks to £8k, so i would doubt they would offer anything close to £8.5k you want.

cost to change in this example would be £2k for you, if you wanted £8.5k for yours and they want £10.5k for theirs.

i still think they would want around £4k!!!! but do prove me wrong ;-)

I've heard that dealers don't pay much attention to extras when buying cars of us - only when selling them on :x

You will always get a better deal selling privately than part ex IMO...

as p1tse says - prove us wrong :D

Well if that's the case I might as well not bother turning up.....but then again at least I'm getting a test drive out of it..

yeah definately go along for a test drive.

they might offer the £8.5k, say if you were going to buy a new motor or spend say £30k!!

will definately be interesting to hear on the part ex.

they have priced it at a quick sale for a cash buyer, and part ex's are crap against cars of similar age and value (give or take a few £k)

if you were a cash buyer, it would be a great buy and would low ball them at £9.5k ;-)

Yip - wish I had the cash instead. One good thing tough is that it's getting towards the end of the quarter and they are trying to reach their sales quotas. Will see what happens tomorrow.

IMHO forget all about what your car is worth and the price of the one on the forecourt. All you are seeking is the 'price to change'. Let the dealer decide where he goes high or low as if your initial figures are correct your after around £2k to pay.

Once you have that simply barter that and add warranties, service, whatever you want.

You did not say which extras it has, but missing some like leather & Sat Nav, is a strong downward negotiator.

bras - I currently have the car in Autotrader (week and a half), have had an offer to swap for VW golf but that's about it, everyone skint!

cj10jeeper - That's where I have the advantage - very unusually for a Volvo S40 I have just about everything, it's black with cream leather interior (again quite an unusual combination for this car), communications pack (cost £2.5k and includes Volvo popup sat nav) integrated GSM telephone system, heated seats, uprated 6 disc (integrated in to the dash) cd player, dual climate control, cruise, 17" alloys etc. All this and I've just reduced the price on Autotrader!

Now tonight I've found one more thing which will give me the edge! LOOK at this - just found from AUDI Ayr (only a few miles up the road from the AUDI garage I'm off to) a 2004 3.0i, 24,000 miles for £1000 CHEAPER £9,495!! Only difference is it is an auto. Am I going mad or has Audi picked up a batch of Z4's?!! See below

Motto - I was actually thinking about accessories missing from the target Z4, which you can use to knock the price down. Of course having yours fully loaded will increase the ability to hold its price.

A game of chess coming up....
