Hi all

Looked at all the old topics so probably 90% clear of the issue

A couple of weeks back my 2.2 was sluggish turnover to start. Replaced battery as it was mega old anyway.

Today noticed it cranked slowly but started- drove 40 miles OK

When went to restart no joy. All electrics and lights fine (its a new battery right?) but no click on key no turnover

Its going to be starter motor right? To recover it tomorrow (its safe at the office) I'm going to take a big bar and hammer to whack the starter, get it going and get that replaced at some point this weekend

Any insights from anyone who had similar?

Anything else I should be checking?

TIA

Stuart

Sounds very much like the starter motor has died, try giving it a wack with a hammer to see if that makes it work, if it starts then you will need to replace it asap as it will fail again. Had mine go without any warning, hammer blow got it going but after a few test starts it failed completley. Ordered a replacement from Carparts4less and was simple to change.

Would advise once it is running to check alternator is charging.
Approx 13.5 to 14.5v at idle with no load,ie lights heater off.
Above 13v at idle with lights heater etc on.

Jon where best to check the voltage? Across the battery or the alternator?

Hope it's a quick and easy fix [ref]bigwinn[/ref].

Given the way I've been following you down the maintenance path lately, I'd better put some cash aside.

If all your lights etc are working and the starter motor is doing nothing, then it’s not the alternator, very likely to be a failed starter motor. Hitting it with a pole and hammer might get you started but you’ll still need to get it fixed.

Update- sharp tap with BFH and it started

Scurried home... Euro Cr4p parts new starter ordered for tomorrow

I'll see how simple (or not) it will be to replace... any tips before I start it?

Very cheap so far- I think with the refund when I drop the old one back its around £50 bud!

Will let you know how it goes- just worried about the torx bolts on the back of the bell housing... on the plus side its not raining Sunday!!!

Good news.
Hoping I won't have to refer to that for quite while yet though. :D
