Video iPod Installation

Hi Guys.... Thanks for the really informative threads, but i've got a quick question which takes the ipod interface to a new level.

I'm looking at the Dension Gateway 300 which does the business. Add to that the Gateway 300 CD Retention Kit and the AV Extender (see ipodcarkitdirect.com), and it looks like a great solution for professional interface with the ipod. However, the Gateway 300 allows for ipod Video signal to be sent, which sounds the business. I went to a local audio shop for advice, and they suggest I need a specific BMW aux interface lead which costs £280 alone.....more than the entire Dension kit. This additional cost is just for the video input apparently.

Has anyone else successfully added video to their ipod installation and is this part necessary.

Thanks in advance from this Newbie who's lovin' the new forum and will try to contribute more in future.

I am guessing they are talking about a VSM module, some details here:

Alpine do a kit, as part of their new Perfect F.I.T. range of products. It's specific by model, but the Z4 is listed. I was talking to their representative at the Frankfurt Motorshow last week. Very impressive, and does the same a you mention - plays videos on the factory screen... and allows full, fast access to the ipod using the factory controls. Still trying to find more details about it though, as it's fairly new right now.

The actual lead they are saying is required is the NAV-INBMW (bottom of page...circa £280) to allow Video input. If the car already has the TV Tuner then they say it can be done with lead AV1BMW (top of page...circa £45)

To add to the confusion, I've spoken to another Car Audio specialist and they have stopped selling Dension equipment due to the number of problems and inconsistency of the problems, so every one requires individual research into the problem, hence a stop on supplying the kit.

I'll do some more digging and report my findings...but any additional info/experience would be helpful.

Thanks Guys.....

Bought an iPod Touch today - have a spare at cost if anyone wants it. (Unwrapped).

Very dissappointed with the sound when plugged into the AUX socket.

So keen to get things sorted with a more long term OE feel.

Any suggestions updates?

I've been in to see the the result is that I'm getting the Dension Gateway Interface with the CD Retention Kit, however the original cable offered to add the video function is incorrect and the real one I need is £405. This said, if the car already has the TV Tuner built in, the necessary cable is under £100 (these are purely for the video output....sound already is covered).

With respect to your iPod Touch, Dension confirmed on the phone to the dealer that they do not yet support 6th Generation iPods (incl. New Nano, New Classic & Touch). There may be some connection as to why your Touch sounds poor....though the interface is different. just guessing.

Any further info on the Video Install (or anyone selling a TV Tuner and associated bits) would be appreciated.

Just a quick update.... After a bit of too'ing and fro'ing, eventually got the Dension Gateway installed, and it's ......decidedly average.

To be fair, the system works and I can scroll through all of the Playlists and Menus, but it's a pretty contrived solution. Dension recommend that you have to plug and unplug the ipod to find it in the Source menu (not ideal when it is in the glovebox and you are driving), however there is a method through the menu function that can do this. It's even more contrived getting back to the CD Changer.

In summary though, this reply is more for information than anything else. The system works and I can use the Ipod in the car and it's all tucked away. For £180, it's a nice neat solution. Maybe i'm just fussy....

P.S. I got the 2 Reinhold Roof Modules added.....now those ARE impressive..... :D

Appreciate the update - you are not the only perfectionist here so no worries on that score. My search will continue.

BTW what are the

The 2point5 unit looks good, but I prefer the unit to be hidden away and to operate through the Nav screen.

The Reinhold Roof Modules are additions to make the roof open from the key and using one touch inside.

Brilliant.

You'll find more info in other threads. If I find them i'll place the link here....

Any further information on the ipod stuff though, then keep posting please.

Thanks
