vibration / rattle noise at low speed

Hi All

Wonder if you can help me with an issue im having with my Z.

Basically when driving at low speeds (1st gear and reverse) I get a strange vibration / rattle noise. It sounds louder in the cabin than it does out (but you can still hear it outside the car)

Its as if something is loose but I cant figure out where or what it is.

I know its a bit vague but im wondering if anyone has had anything similar.

Thanks

Dan

Exhaust heat shield perhaps?
Any clues if you open up the bonnet?#
Can you hear it at idle or low revs?

I did a little test last night, it only seems to happen when the car is going really slow (biting point slow)

This morning when reversing into my spot at work, I opened the door to see if I could figure out where it was coming from and it seems to be directly under the cabin.

Could this be a loose belly pan? Any other ideas?

Cheers

Dan

Well, the result of the rattle / vibration mentioned in this thread was down to a bent exhaust shield.

I asked the mechanic to have a look when my car was in for an oil service.

Two other things that came up, Brake pads are down to 90% worn and my N/S/R spring is snapped.

Any idea how much these cost to relace before my next MOT is due? I was quoted around £220 by the garage that did my service.

The boken spring seems fairly common, do i need to change both rear springs or is it ok just to change the broken one?

£180 dealer fitted IIRC. I just replaced the one on mine...

If you're going to change springs, I'd change at least both the rear 2, and get aftermarket rear shock mounts at the same time. You'll need to get an alignment either way. This will likely save you more money and hassles in the long run.

If your Z4 has +50k miles, might as well change the struts/shocks, too. Go with Koni's. Better ride comfort and adjustable dampers.

I was quoted £166 for a pair of rear spring from BMW, that's not fitted. I replaced all 4 springs and done them myself for £150 all in.

* Shame i've just binned a perfectly good rear spring, but did offer it on the forum for free, i would have fitted it also. :(

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but I have the exact same rattle. If it is the exhaust shield, do I need to get it seen to in the near future, or can I just drive on until the next service in about 3 months and just turn the music up louder ?

I know this thread is old but I had a high pitched metallic rattle coming from the rear nearside which bugged me for three months, I had my rear brakes checked out and they found that the parking brake shoes where not secure as the small fixings that hold them to the brake shield had rusted and pulled through the shield. The rattling was the two fixings bouncing about at low speed but I assume at high speed the centrifugal stopped the rattle?

This shows the corroded Brake shield where the fixing has pulled through.

The fixing that where rattleing around in the drum.

Shoe not fixed, missing fixing here.

Does it do it when at idle? If so, does it make a difference if you engage the clutch or not?

Scuzi - I have this metallic rattle which stops when I engage the clutch! Have you any idea what this is? Car is booked in at a specialist in two weeks time but would love to know now!!

Believe that is the dual mass flywheel... I get that when I slowly start to engage the clutch and then goes away
