Vibration on steering wheel

Hi, this problem occurs every once in a while (maybe once a week) I assume it's brake related as the steering wheel vibrates at all speeds and o/s front wheel is very hot. Then when you stop the car the problem seems to go away.First time this happened i just got to work but 9 hours later I drove 20 miles home without any problems. I thought if the brakes were bound on they would remain bound on, or is it an electrical fault as in the anti lock system
Any suggestions most welcome.

Depends how old your car is and what what its been through, but could easily be a stuck caliper? Don't know how they are designed on the beemer, but on other cars, commonly the piston or piston housing corrodes, stopping it from disengaging sometimes? Could be its partly disengaged but still applying a bit of braking. Should take the stealer a couple of minutes to find out.... :)
 
A bit more diagnosis is required.
Does it vibrate all the time or just when braking?

As you say it stops sometimes then it can't be balancing, bearings etc as they can't self correct.

Since you say one wheel gets hot and its intermmitent then I'd go with lacroupade and sticking caliper. It's a cheap but effective design but the carrier pins can stick or as stated the piston in the housing. Needs fixing before it damages the rotor or helps you into a ditch with off balance brakes
 
Just a thought; if it WAS a sticky caliper, it ought to pull a bit towards the side you say is getting hot (when the vibration occurs)...
 
Thanks for your input must be brakes, it happened again Thurs same story came on after about 15 miles I had to carry on for about 5 miles quite bad vibration.Stopped for about 5 mins drove away fine. Getting it looked at Mon let you know outcome.As was mentioned must get it sorted before it causes any long term damage or worse I end up in a ditch ????? :cry:
 
Hi all, It's taken a while but solved the problem the o/s caliper must have some type of cover fitted this was not fitted correctly so water and dust had caused all the problems.I was told this may have been faulty since new.
Car seems fine, happy bunny once again.

I have a similar problem the dust cover came off the piston then water and grime (salt) gets in and makes the caliper stick they are swines to get back in I will be doing mine over the christmas brake caliper of piston out to refit
