So anyone had any success getting one of these to work.

Should have known it would be "plug and playup".

Picture shows the adapter but not the pass through cable.

Spent all afternoon trying to suss it out.
Cables supplied plus bought adapter cable seperate to fit my 2009 with basic 6 speaker set up.
Cables look like a simple pass through the amp. tracing the colours through.
Transferred over the optical green cables to new plug..
Have 12v and ground going into amp, no lights showing.
iDrive screen stays down all silent no music playing.

Go back to standard, all working.

Been back and forth about 4 times now.
Finally gave up.
Now assume the amp is faulty?

This circuit allows the amplifier to switch on and off without a remote turn on wire
when using high level input, for low level input (RCA) it will still be necessary to
connect the remote turn on wire from the headunit.

???

I’ve got one (actually 2 and a mono sub amp) and all worked no problem, the link you have posted says BMW3 so I presume it’s for the 3 series, is the e89 different? As Peter says it should power up from the “high input” audio signal, have you physically checked all the wires from the quad lock on the head unit run back to the correct position on the wiring harness quod lock connector?

The link just example. Rechecked everything 4 times now, nothing, dead.
Just installed the mmi box, not sure if that is interfering with the amp switching on.
But to be honest, the mmi box i think as actually improved the sound over standard, don't need the amp.
If i can send amp. back i will, fed up of messing.
Another lesson learnt.

I’ve got the Mr12 volt box and that didn’t cause any problems with the amp so perhaps yours is faulty, have you checked the fuse in the amp?
An amp definitely gives more punch and improves the sound.

Fuse ok.
Only link to mmi is the lvds cable, i assume just the screen signals.
I seem to have a knack of seeing into the future, i knew it play up and not just work.

I would have thought at least the green led would light up with ign. on, at least show it's powering up, would be a start.
Wire going in has 12 volts and negative black wire.

Slept on it.
Laid out wiring harness and studied carefully to trace all the wires going somewhere logical.
Plugged back in....all working now.
Just nowhere at the moment to mount the amp.
Space behind radio needed for the connectors. Had to move mmi out of that space.

I may be imagining it - but I've heard there a good spot for this behind the glovebox cavity?
or perhaps mounted under the glovebox - you wouldn't see it.

Worth a search... passenger footwell feels a bit rubbish.

I’ve got my Mr12volt in the gap between the transmission tunnel and the bottom of the dash, it’s a snug fit, I initially fitted the Vibe amp under the driver’s side lower dash held in place with tie wraps before I upgraded the subs behind the seats and moved it to where the factory amp would have been.

I think if you have CIC/iDrive I couldn’t see enough space in there?

Remove the lower trim panel below the fuse box and look on top of the transmission tunnel towards the front where the dash comes down, there’s a small gap about 30mm high that goes right through to the driver’s side, there’s just enough room to squeeze the Mr12volt unit in there. It can probably be accessed from the driver’s side as well.

I started with the mmi in gap behind the radio next to blower housing, perfect spot..
But i now need that space for all the connectors for the amp. and cables.
Today i bolted amp to the one inch odd vertical lip on the removable under glove box tray exposed in footwell.
Mounted vertical as instructions say not upside down.
With wires passing back through to the hidden side.
I think then just enough room above that tray for mmi box.

Ah yes that gap ..I have some metal box in front of that in mind

Will be great to hear your experience with this amp once it’s all setup. I’ve just had the Mr12Volt MMI box installed and a big software update by BMW which was actually good value I think. Started out with an update to the 2008 maps and ended up with a full software and firmware update across the car all for the same charge…£150.

So mmi box behind heater controls freed up space for the wires, but needed modding.
I cut out two connectors leaving just the adapter plug.
With some effort it fitted behind the radio.
