VF Engineering is looking for a couple of Z4's to finish tuning on their supercharger kit. They are looking for ones with the MS45 software from BMW (I beleive this is the 3.0i & 2.5i, 2003-2007). VF Engineering is located in Anaheim, California, so the car will need to be in the general area. Unfortunatly my car is on the other side of the country, or else I would do it!

Here's what my contact at VF sent me on Friday as the deal to put out to my fellow Z4 driver's. Send me a PM and I'll forward the contact info.

20% discount and free install. this is a saving of $2250 of the advertized price of $5000 and $1250 labor.
need the car for 2-3 weeks.
Need 2.5 liter and 3.0 in manual and or auto transmissions. we need to check all 4 combinations of cars

Whoa. Uhm so am I doing the correct math and seeing a total cost of $6250? Or do I need to be subtracting? Also being i'm a pretty much a complete engine n00b, do they do all the corresponding upgrades that might go with this (for example drive train an other things that are good to have when you get more torque/HP)?
 
Yep, you did the math correctly :o and, nope, just bolting on the SC. I do believe that there is software that goes with it (haven't looked in a while)
 
Total normal cost $6,250. With the $2,250 discount the cost would be $4,000 for a kit with tuning ready to drive (hardware, software, installed, everything)

I've been running their kit on my 530 for 2 years and 20,000 miles with no issues. That's a total of 156,000 miles on an m54 engine.

A very Good Point...

If an Exemption Order is issued by the State, there should be no problem with obtaining a smog certification. If not, it would fail the visual inspection, and the part or parts would all have to be removed....

If I am not mistaken (and please let me know if this is incorrect)... It is to my understanding, and the law, that an aftermarket part (such as a SC or whatever) that is installed into certain vehicles registered in the State of California must be CARB Exempt.

In addition, I was also informed that a licensed shop/tuner/ doing business in the State of CA. etc.... by law, would be in violation of the CVC and CC to install an aftermarket part, into a vehicle that is legally registered to operate on a California State and/ or City public highway, street and/ or roadway.... :(

All I know now, is that the State is coming down very hard on shops that do "illegal performance tuning"...

One can confirm this with Rose Castro, at the CA Air Resources Board...
 
Almost forgot to say...a "pending application" for an CA Exemption Order does not qualify one to pass smog.
The CA EO Identification No. decal must be also affixed to the part as well...I was further told that it is either "legal", or it is "not"...
 
From what I understand the process is almost finished for the CARB. I'll drop them am e-mail to see. It's not much of an issue here in Maryland. :D
 
Yeah, it is really disappointing when I find an aftermarket product that I really want to purchase, and then I read the small print it says, Emissions Approved in 49 States, and knowing that the 50th State not approved is obviously California :( …….Sometimes, and it’s rare I see Hawaii, and Alaska as part the list of “Not Approved In” status….Oh well….
 
At 8:00 i'm going to give them a call and roll out to their location ( 5 miles away ) and have a chat. :driving:

Z4 + 105 hp + 330 hp = ///M ?

Only reason I see doing this is for the Top speed run at the secret location........
 
Oh well, as it turns out, I have what they want more or less, However due to the fact that I have 112K miles on my zed, they prefer not to use me as a project car.

They are tring to get the CARB sticker with this project. They would rather have an newer car for the project with less miles. The way I was told that they need a car for 1 month ( +or - ). This would give them the time to install and dial in the SC and get the CARB testing done. There is no promise to pass the testing by the state. So, you might install it and need to remove itto get a smog test later at a fee. They have SC installed all over, just not on Z's with a given ECU. I guess BMW changed to the E45 ECU in mid 2003. They use the same ECU through 2005. If they were to get an 06 with the new motor and ECU it would kill two birds with one stone. I understand all the reasons for their wishes. :headbang:
