VERY WEIRD ROOF PROBLEM!

greetings from australia!
after 6 years of part time work and smart investing i have just purchased a 2003 3.0i as my first car!
i have brought the car with a roof problem and am looking to see if anyone has had the same problem..
once you press the roof off button the windows go down half way, roof unlocks and thats about it( the red button on the roof off flashes)
i have done some small mods to the car.. (sound gen, aux,19'' bbs lm.. but the time has come for me to sort out the problem!
please, any help is greatly appreciated!
 
Nice to have that as a first car.

Sounds like hydraulic pump has gone. Have a search as lots of info on here about it.
 
from what i have read i was tossing up between a motor or hyd pump, just thought id see if anyone else has had the same problem, will look further into it, thanks a lot mate!
 
Motor/pump = same thing. There is a small motor in the roof that operates the windscreen clamps, if they unlock and that's it, then its the motor/pump in the bottom of the car (that moves the actual roof) that's likely broken. They can be refurbed but its better to get it replaced with a new one if you're keeping the car long.
 
ok cool, my family owns a used car dealership and service centre just looking at a few other threads of how to's, any mechanic should be able to change over the motor i gather?... (Havnt got enough funds to get it done by a dealer as i spent everything on the car!!)
 
Yep, its a few hours work, you have to take the roof off and swap over the motor which is attached to the roof mech lower down. Lots of info on here and its very common (if costly) on the e85 Z4.
