Very Loud Tapping after giving it some beans?? Video

OK so today saw me try out the route i have planned for this weekends Hoon! the trip was awesome apart from the point where i gave the keys to my mate so i could get a recording of the new exhaust, when he came back the engine was tapping like crazy and there was a smell of burning oil!!

i went to check the oil and water but now cant seem to get my bonnet open either! GREAT!

so anyway ive added the video we took and you can hear the tapping at the end!

just as a note the car now sounds perfectly fine! and the video was take some 100 miles into the trip!

This is just a guess. Could it be temporary oil starvation to the head from booting it?

Sounds like top end... either blockage or wrong oil/old oil perhaps?

Someone has said that i Could have cooked the oil making it thin and the sound is the tappets? Why would I not have any warning lights and why would the tapping stop? It is due a service in 7k

Personally I wouldn't wait the 7k miles, your engine has given you warning signs that something isn't quite right, you may have got away with serious damage for now but unless you did the last oil change yourself can you be 100% sure that the right oil is in there?

Changing the oil is the quickest & easiest thing to do in this situation & certainly can only have a neutral or positive outcome.

If it's something you don't want to do yourself check out national tyres oil change service, I've got a 6 cyl & been quoted £59.36 using 5w/30 fully synthetic (someone else said they use Castrol oil), there's a 10% off voucher you can use also, at least if you use national tyres insist on being shown the oil they use, or watch them fill it.

PS, if you go down this route I wouldn't bother getting them to reset the service indicator, just consider it a precautionary oil change.

Well it's booked in tomorrow at my indy (a personal friend) so it will be getting changed. What oil is best? She has 98300 miles now

I'd personally talk to the garage about having the engine flushed (pressure flushed if they can) to remove any possible cake up on the oil tracts as that sounds like a possible cause. I take it the oil level was ok of course?

Not really, different people do it different ways, some have gear to run the cleaner through the engine block, others just add in cleaners and run the engine for a short while in the hope it dissolves any built up crap. If you're experiencing oil starvation and you're considering an oil change, its going to be best to flush it first.
