Verdict on ownership of a MK 1 Z4 after 2 days!

I have always loved the look of the Z4 since it's launch but until recently never been able to own one, well that all ended 4 days Go when I went to view a Z4 3.0l in sterling grey and red leather with 122k and full service record. Pulling up in the owners drive I was confronted with the car-

It looked gorgeous in the grey paintwork one of the best colours on the Z4 IMO sitting on split rim alloys. The owner was very helpful and after a lengthy tour round the car we set off on a test drive, the sound of the straight six firing up brought an instant smile to my face and off we set, 20 minutes later we pulled back up on the drive with no faults to query a deal was done.

I had to wait two days till I could pick it up and finally the day arrived to collect and face a two hour drive home in the Z4 and what a drive it was had the radio turned off the whole time and happy to listen to that engine!

So my verdict on the Z4? In a word AMAZING! These truly are a great car first time owning a bmw and very Impressed with the build quality the handling and just how fast it felt, not forgetting that sport button! :D

Jobs need doing on the Z4 well after spending many months trawling this forum two subjects that kept popping up was the drain channels for the soft top and the that engine valve ( forgot the name of it ) at the side top part of the engine which has a metal pin and a flap. Well I checked the valve and all looked well the flap sprung back and no movement from the pin, next job on my list is the drain holes found some very useful guides on here which I will follow.

Now booked in for a service and most important a full health check. With the car on 122k miles I'm thinking a gearbox oil change would be a good idea.

Wheels need a full refurb a couple of dints to sort out and a light scuff on the rear bumper which may just polish out.

Ok a newbee question I have

Is the 3.0l engine chain or cambelt? Should it need replacing bearing in mind the mileage.

Already I know this car is a keeper and want to restore it back to its showroom condition using OM parts if possible. One very happy Z4 owner.

Glad its been as good as expected & sorting the cosmetics & niggles is part of the ownership pleasure .
No need for concern over the chain/belt . It is a chain & would be a real rarity for it to cause you any issue
Gearbox oil i would have to agree with :thumbsup:
 
That looks a remarkably tidy Zed that's been well cared for - should give you years of enjoyment.

Try to get out on a Forum meet/run - adds a great deal to the ownership experience.

That is one nice Zed, well done now get the roof down and enjoy the car. I have a 2.2I Se in black and have loved the car from day one. As you say who needs a stereo when you have the straight six singing to you??.

I have not been on the forums long, but is this something to do with the vanos vario valve timing? A mate of mine at work just bought an old 2002 E46 M3 and he mentioned vanos a few times. What's the story please? :(

Hi James. No its called the DISA valve, here is a recent topic on it-

Also here is a picture of the box which has the valve held on only by 2 screws. The box is located on the right side of the engine head when looking at the engine from the front.

Also if you google it it will up lots of info and there's also utube clips. It's very easy to check and only took me 10 minuets.
