Venice for my birthday

If you want to transfer by water taxi and don't mind sharing with people and the cost then do it!
If you want to be alone then you'll have to cough up the full amount.

We have never used the taxi's (see loads of them tho) as the bus is so easy and cheap and the taxi's are extortionate but they are great for taking you pretty much straight to where you are going.

The taxi's are big enough for a few people and luggage but it won't be spacious if you share.
 
When we went we stayed in the Hilton Stucky - was really nice. 16 euros for a Coke though!

We got a water taxi transfer from the airport to the hotel. Was probably the coolest arrival Ive ever had. We absolutely loved it. bottle of champagne and a tour of venice before arriving at the hotel. Bottle of champagne on the way. Was truly awesome.

For great food, check out Harrys Bar. basically, the further you go off the beaten track, the better the food gets (and cheaper)... so don;t be afraid to ask the locals.

Any restaurant you would recommend for is to push the boat out as a bit or a lot of treat.

Only taking hand luggage so I won't be taking anything to formal.
 
That's a difficult one as we've had some cracking meals but haven't a clue of the name of the restaurants.

Venice's streets are like a rabbit warren, you'll walk for miles (make sure you have comfy shoes) and come across some gems if you go off the main streets.
There's not as many restaurants in The Ghetto area or near the Arsenale.
What I would do if I were you is look on Tripadvisor. You can see where they are on a map. The better ones will be booked so go there the day you get there and go and book or ask your hotel to ring them and book for you.

We usually just dive in somewhere we like the look of if the menu outside looks ok.

Your hotel should be able to recommend somewhere too, explain to them what you want.

Bear in mind addresses are hard to find in Venice, as anyone that's been will tell you!
That's one of the great things about it! If you think you are lost my advice is look at the yellow signs on the walls, they will either be pointing to the train station (Ferrovia), St Marks square or the Rialto bridge. You can get your bearings that way with the help of the map you will get at the hotel.

(Ps. There's a Ferrari shop and shoe shops filled with the most gorgeous shoes your missus will ever see!)
 
Oh, just remembered. When you go to the airport to go back there is usually massive queues to get through security. There are two queues but it doesn't look like it. There's one on the right hand side for EU nationals but you can't see it at first and end up joining a massive queue unnecessarily. Walk on the right hand side of the queues and you should see the EU entrance and join that queue. :thumbsup:
 
I must be Mr Grumpy as I hated the place last year I went. That was in June though.

Forever queuing to park the rental car, water taxi packed to capacity, shuffle in crowds through the small streets, waaaaaaay too many people about, waaaaaaaaay too hot. 120 Euro for a gondola ride. 120 Euro for 30 minutes ????

Yeah, I know.

Was in the area (Lake Garda), so thought we would pop up there to see what the fuss was all about. So going from the nice Lakes, to that place was rather a shock after which I swore I would never go back :)
 
Great, thanks guys I'm taking note of everything you say (apart from mr grumpy lol).

Will keep posting till I go. Obviously I will repay you all with lots of holiday snaps!
 
I am sure you will enjoy it. I googled the best time for Venice and mid September seems to be good so you should not experience the same hell hole that I did.
