Vehicles being transported with taped over registration plates

A couple of times recently I've seen a vehicle on a trailer with half of the vehicle's number plate taped over. Is this to prevent ANPR picking up the vehicle in transport in case, maybe, it (legitimately) has no tax and/or MOT?

I always thought it was so that naughty people didn't clone the reg numbers and put them on similar cars. Used to be generally on cars going to be scrapped or write-offs.
Be interested to know if there are other reasons

Like Pondrew I thought it was to prevent cloning.

I don't think ANPR cameras are an issue as my mate buys and sells a few using his single car transporter and he never covers the plates. I'm sure I'd have heard about it if he'd had ANPR issues!

I always thought it was so people wouldn’t be able to ID them when they got repaired and put back up for sale.

I'd be a bit bemused if I got a speeding ticket after my car had been on the back of a recovery truck though...

It’s the same as when advertising people often block the reg number as criminals just search the model online and nick the reg number...I had it done to me on a motorbike I was advertising, I was working in Liverpool my ducati was in Leeds but it was clocked through a speed camera in Grays I had to send an image of a very special ducati 848 and police instantly wiped the camera offence as the bike will not have looked like mine.

Depends where you live though. Going over dartboard tolls the wrong Numberplates could easily be read if not covered.
