Vehicle trackers

Any idea of what is involved in fitting this? Is there a DIY on the forums? Couldn't find one.
Was contemplating fitting one but I trust no one to work on the car but myself, especially with new interior trim.
The one thing to make sure is that it is connected properly and it turns off after a while or after a week you will have no battery.
The Zs are notorious for constant power, like the cig lighter socket never going off.
 
Erm........why would you want a security tracker to turn off after a week...or at all? It then becomes a useless piece of deadweight.

No, it's supposed to turn off the charging of the tracker like 30 mins after you lock the car and then resumes when it gets power again.
The tracker has its own battery that runs off that in the meantime but if you don't install it correctly and don't drive your car for 1 week you will get a flat battery.

I would assume it needs the usual wires, ground, positive and ignition (not connecting the ignition will mean it always drains the battery).
 
Ok, I see where you're coming from now. Thanks for that info, hopefully the installer has done a proper job, we'll wait and see.
Check out the Amazon link and read the reviews, some buyers have installed it themselves.
 
I'm quite interested in one of the Amazon trackers. but in general I don't like things with an ongoing monthly cost as would be with a contract or (most) PAYG Sims, however this seems quite good... http://www.ovivomobile.com/offer/ovivo-for-phones/ £20 upfront, £15 is credit, the other fiver covers admin & the cost of the sim itself, no need to top up until the credit expires as far as I can see, casual browsing suggests that Ovivo uses Vodafone's network.

Ovivo uses advertising on your phone, this is how it is cheap, but you'll never see the ad's on your tracker :thumbsup:

GiFFGaff as other have said is another option.

I use a Giff Gaff sim in mine..you can go on the web site and set it to top up when it reaches a set threshold. Mines set at £3

I just have it using the battery. It pings you when its nearly flat and it lasts 60 days as long as I dont keep interrogate it too much

The backtoyou tracker device looks and seems exactly the same as the £30 one I bought on Amazon, but they're charging £125 for it.
The Ovivo sim looks interesting but I think I'll be able to manage my £10 a year charge with Vodafone.
 
My Zed is a 2003 and it definitely has a Tracker fitted. Never used it though as most insurance companies offer no discount for it on a car of this age and value. Didn't bother asking this year but last year only one insurer offered a discount for it and iirc it was only around £20! Tracker wanted around £100 a year subscription! :thumbsdown:

Yea they look very similar and im sure they work in a similar fashion..unfortunately I bought the back2you one before I had seen these others.

I bought another cheap GPS tracker off flea bay to faff about with and found it to be a pain to use..it sent you an sms snd you then had to cut n paste bits out of the text to input into Google maps, whereas on my back2you I just hit the link in the sms and it fires Google naps straight up

I have a Viper alarm fitted to my car and will be adding their SmartStart tracking app to it. I've seen how it works on my partners car and it is fantastic! The app can also tell you if your door, trunk etc is closed or not and you can set parameters so you will be notified if the vehicle enters an undesired area etc (if someone is borrowing the car) for instance. It has a host of abilities, not cheap but worth it.
 
The Viper sounds good, the Amazon tracker does the same things, 'geo -fencing' is what you refer to, though I'm just happy with using the basic functions.
 
It is a very comprehensive system. It's massive in America bit is now available over here through;
http://www.securemycar.co.uk. Antony is the main chap there and he certainly knows his stuff when it comes to wiring and Bm's
 
Not all Zeds had a tracker as standard. Sytners had them fitted to all Alpinas, no idea if they had them fitted to all other cars but I doubt it as IMmie was supplied by Syters from new and didn't have one.
