Vehicle trackers

So being a newbie, called up my insurers (LV) who are insisting that a tracker is fitted to my car else they won't insure it against theft.

Now, as LV's motor policy is 5 star Defaqto rated, I'm loathe to change providers, also I can have my 9 years NCD on both my surf wagon (Citroen Picaso Diesel, don't knock it , my 9' 4" longboard fits inside it!) and my new Zed.

I have bought this off Amazon, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tracker-Vehicle-Theft-Protection-System-Black/dp/B003XDN58K

Everyone is raving about it. I'm not going to spend a mint on a device and pay £150/yr for 24 hour monitoring and guards etc, sheesh my Zed costs less than a new Nissan Micra for goodness sake!

Any experience of it? I'll get an auto electrician to fit it, wonder how much they'll charge?

Shop around.

I found that the insurance goes up less than the cost of the annual subscription if you don't have one and, in any event, if some scally does nick it, I don't think I'd really want what's left of it back.

Thanks Dave but LV said that there is no alternative, unless I get one fitted, they won't insure against theft, end of.

They said that 24hr monitoring is not necessary and said it doesn't matter what type of tracker it is as long as its a tracker.

I had to have one with my insurance. Car was 22k, when I bought it though, so happy to have one fitted. Took out life of car cover, so no annual subscription. Cost £1200 for the device fitting and life cover all paid up front, but now no more to pay, as long as I keep the car. Appreciate the maths will be more difficult to justify, as E85's cost a lot less now. Might be worth finding an insurer who does not require a tracker and paying a bit more.

Your zed has tracker fitted as standard and only needs activating, not sure how you go about it but a dealer should be able to help, I took a lifetime monitor subscription when I bought mine.

As above it has one allready

You should of got the tracker pack with the car it has the serial number you need to activate it with tracker but you will have to pay the subscription

I hadnt herd of any insurance company's insisting on a tracker for a sub 10k car

I would ensure somewhere else, not worth the effort imho

Also I dont really understand what lv are saying you don't need 24hr monitoring? The tracker ones arnt 24hr monitored you ring them when your car has been nicked and they find it, still have to pay annually tho

Depends which tracker & level of cover you go for.

I get a call from Tracker if mine's been moved, such as when it's on the back of a flat-bed (puncture).

whats this pre fitted tracker you speak of? is it a standard fit thing or an option as i have no paperwork for it. it might help me as my insurance is stupid money >800 PA

any idea how easy it is to fit that one from amazon? i know a few who will be interested in that if its as good as it says

Depending on the age of your car mine is a 2004 all UK spec BMWs came with Tracker as standard factory fit option that merely needed the owner to take out a subscription with them.

Contact http://www.tracker.co.uk and see what they have say as this is what should be fitted.

All very interesting. I'll call up the dealer to see whether mine has a tracker OEM. However, I'm not paying an annual fee so I'll probably just as likely get my Amazon one fitted and be done, reckon it will work out around £100 all in and no annual subscription.

It doesn't pay me to change insurers as with LV it cost me £200 a year due to being able to use my NCD built up on my other car, which I am keeping and also on the Zed. If I move from LV, cheapest quote is £800, hence the reason I'm staying.

let us know how you get on with that, im interested in things like fitting and ease of use etc. a friend has been on about getting a tracker since his car was stolen.

As said there is one fitted, though neither the first owner or the dealer that sold the car from new or Tracker.co.uk, could confirm, if mine had one, so I ended up buying a new one. Was peaved, when the fitter handed me the original. :x

I notice the Amazon item requires a SIM, so presumably, there will be on an ogoing cost with it. Still looks like a good deal.

I have had the tracker company phone me twice. On both occasions the car was in the Garage at home. Must be the Cornish air. :?

Called a couple of BMW dealers and they both said that vehicle trackers are not fitted as standard to their cars, it's an optional extra.

So, I guess the only way to find out is when I get a fitter to fit my new one!

Yes, the Amazon tracker I have requires a sim card so I plan to get a pay as you go with no time limit on the credit.

So, that's the Vehicle tracker I bought off Amazon fitted. It seems the dogs ballcocks.

It cost me £30, fitter charged £60 and I bought a Vodafone pay as you go sim card for it for a fiver. So for £95 I've got me a vehicle tracker!
According to Vodafone, I need to top up inside a 180 day limit to keep the number, so therefore my 'tracking charges' work out at £10 a year.

It has a shedload of functions, but all I wanted was to be able to call it and for it to respond with the cars Lat/Long position, time and speed if I woke up one morning and it was missing from my drive - and also to satisfy the requirements of my insurers.

So, you make a call to the sim that's in the tracker unit, hang up and it sends you a text with all the info above and a link to click into google maps to pinpoint the cars position.

Get one, you know it makes sense!

Sounds great Geezah ... Did you have to provide the insurers with a fitting certificate or anything ?

Well, LV said they weren't bothered what tracker I fitted as long as I had a tracker, so I would advise you check with your specific insurer.

I'll let LV know tomorrow morning that it's been done.

Also....I have been told by the dealers that trackers are not fitted as standard, fitter couldn't find one either (this is a 2008 car).

But.....he found full built in Bluetooth connectivity and ive just hooked up my idiotphone5 up to it, works a dream, bonus!

thanks for the update and heads up, sounds to me like a decent plan. a tracker for £100. i wounder how it will work etc when the car is placed in a container and the like or if it will work overseas.

what ever ill pass it onto my mate as im sure he will be keen to have a look.

have you had a go with the extra features?

It works wherever you get a mobile phone signal. You can configure it to work anywhere. Not bothered about all the other extra features, can't remember the last incident of car jacking in these parts, anyhow, the car is fitted with an immobiliser and alarm as standard.
Check out the link above for full details and reviews. Just notified my insurers LV that it was fitted and they were happy bunnies.
