VED refund

Taxed my car for 12 months ( due to expire end May ) - now I'm not selling and with winter approaching I've decided to SORN until the Spring - I can do this and get back 7 months ( £160 ) - I began to think what's to stop me buying 12 months tax in April and then Sorn again in Sept instead of just buying 6 months tax and paying the extra £20 or so
- you don't even have to complete a form as you can now Sorn online and they automatically send you a refund - just a thought

nothing at all. i took my car off sorn for just 1 day to do a track day so bought 12 months and then refunded it a week later.

I've always bought 12 months and then sent away end of october for refund on my 4 months left

That's what my Dad does, buys a years tax for his M3 vert once the weathers nice then September time usually sorns it and get the money back usually from October to end of March, then he had the option of the weathers been good to keep the car on the road longer.

It's now just easier!

Are you sure that simply by doing the SORN on line, you automatically get back the unused, full months, VED. I thought you had to send off a V14, or some such form, to get the VED back. With all these changes lately, it's difficult to keep up.

I've got a couple of months left on the X5 and won't be using it till mid January so would like to do this.

Taken from dvla web site.....

Vehicle tax refunds

You will no longer need to make a separate application for a refund of vehicle tax. DVLA will automatically issue a refund when a notification is received from the person named on DVLA vehicle register that the:
•vehicle has been sold or transferred
•vehicle has been scrapped at an Authorised Treatment Facility
•vehicle has been exported
•vehicle has been removed from the road and the person on the vehicle register has made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
•person on the vehicle register has changed the tax class on the vehicle to an exempt duty tax class

Nice one Mr wheel nut and thank you. This new VED system seems to make more sense by the minute.

The X5 will also be done at the end of the month. I guess they send you a cheque or is there a part on the SORN application to give a bank account for the refund?
