Vanos

Well the Z went in for a Vanos repair under warranty today.

Immediate thoughts:-

1 smooth as silk idle now
2 no smoke at all from exhaust (wasn't bad before but noticeable in the passenger wing mirror)
3 no hesitation when flooring it from about 2k rpm
4 got 6.5mpg more on the way home at about 80, 29.5 on way there 36 on way home
5 the 3 to 4k rev range is completely different, much revier

On the whole, well chuffed

:driving:

Glad to hear it...I am thinking of getting my Vanos sorted on my alpina by Phil @ CPC..but costing me £500!

Car drives good...just not sure if it would make a £500 difference...

Excuse my ignorance, but is the Vanos an issue on the N52 engines (I couldn't see what Tr1ckster has from his post)

I got my Alpina done with Phil last week and am really glad I did! It had developed a worrying rattle and very lumpy idle so booked it in to be looked at. Turns out the internals of the vanos had worked themselves loose. Phil rebuilt the vanos, replaced timing chain tensioner and it's running like a dream now. Puts a smile on my face every time I drive it again now!

Personally I think it's well worth it if you start to notice any odd behaviour, rough running or rattles.

Yes N52 I have a 3.0si Coupe mate.

Edit added a sig now lol
Cheers, thanks for giving me one more thing to worry about... :P

I thought the N52 VANOS didn't have the same issues with seals that the earlier engines did. Did they repair or replace your VANOS Trickster?

Replaced the seals with a Vanos repair kit mate.

Edit bare in mind mine has 110k miles on it so maybe it was a sign of problems to come for other cars in a few years

Isnt this a job that anyone handy with the spanners can do themselves. Although I dont think I have a problem on my car I read somewhere that every older car will be starting to develop vanos issues. So may spend a bit of time over winter becoming familiar with the vanos.

Can you clarify, did you have the Vanos mechanism replaced, or just the solenoids?

I can when the garage invoice the dealer in a week or so. He is going to send me a copy for my records mate.
