vanos

Hi, this is a subject often covered, my z4 e85 3.0lt has just ticked over 60,000 and is an 03. Engine runs smoothly and idles nicely, would it be worthy of a vanos recondition and could anyone recommend a good place have the work done in Gloucestershire. Would do it myself but have read getting the vanos off can be quite difficult with lack of room.

The VANOS is quite hard to get off, although easier with a second pair of hands wielding a pry bar. However the difference between doing it yourself and having a garage do it will likely to run to several hundred pounds. I did mine recently on 80k. There was disappointingly little difference at first, but a noticeable increase in pep after a hundred miles or so.

There are several things you can do including upgrading the piston seals (must do), replacing the solenoid o-rings, rattle rings and needle bearings. You should also factor in replacing the valve cover gasket and VANOS gaskets as these are likely to be brittle after 20 years.
X8R do great kits ranging from £35 to upwards of £150 depending on how extensively you want to refurbish the VANOS. Their on line pictorial instructions are excellent.
