VANOS

I went to Mr VANOS to buy the seals but just told me to buy them through the internet, bought the set from i6 automotive and fitted in an evening, easy to do after watching a few YouTube instructional videos.

How do you do this job Mike? Change the solenoids for refurbed ones then you in turn refurb the ones you just took out? How long does it take and cost?
Do I need this on my 50000 N52 2007 2.5?

Did you have to raise the engine to get proper access to the Vanos unit? (IE loosen the engine mounts and jack it up) or Not?

Mack, I thought that too. So I phoned TWG in Camberley who I have used and they have done good work. They quoted £600 which I thought was expensive. Is it?

I'm assuming yours is an M54 series engine. If so then yes it is. Its a massive piss take to be honest it's a 3 hour job if your familiar with the job and the parts including gaskets etc are sub £100 so that's a huge amount for labour.

It's only probably 4 hours at home. Its true it's slightly harder than on an E46 due to the access but that's easily over come.

This is high up on my list as mine lacks any grunt below about 3.5k. A trip to Mike will be planned in the early part of next year.

I may have to tag along. I've no idea if mine is affected or not, but I feel like it's lacking in mid range grunt so could be the answer.

Hi, from what I’ve read the seals go in the vanos activation pistons & not the solenoids. Also the materials used were changed on the n52 engine and they don’t seem to suffer as the m54 varieties did

Yup, £300 in change.... And that includes a quality cam cover gasket (Elring) the VANOS kit itself, and a new genuine BMW VANOS gasket. It's not worth scrimping on the gaskets, the cheaper ones leak.

Mike

Cheers for that, I thought it sounded high! Yes, mine is a 2004 3.0. I may well have to drive to Merseyside in the next few months I think.

Yes, just loosened engine mount and raised engine enough to gain access, theres just enough space...

I was speaking to a guy at work about this yesterday and he had his done on his e46 about
2 years back up here (manchester area) by a BMW specialist. It cost him about £300 all in with vat so it does seem like the going rate. Cant remember where he said. But suffice to say vanos on the M54 is a well know job in BMW circles and most specialists should be able to do it for reasonable money. Its just another repair really. Its not like roof motor relocations which really do seem to be a real speciality and only offered by the likes of Number 5, Durham Dave, Bowser, dlv amongst offers on here.

If it was £300 two years ago, I think it will most certainly be more now?

Depends on the labour rate. Most specialist bmw places near me are in the £55-65 Mark labour wise. Its only a 3 hour job so £300 inc the parts didn't seem unreasonable.cant see prices changing too much in just a few years.

Hi mike,
