Vanos Solenoid Replacement

Hi,

I’m swapping out the solenoids (N52) this weekend and have been watching the usual YouTube vids for this simple procedure. The process is described as wipe the hole with a rag, shove in the solenoid, and screw up tight.

Are there any finer points they have missed such as a recommended torque setting for the bolt? Should it be replaced or greased? Any other comments appreciated.

Thanks.

I’d replace with a new bolt, same as recommended when changing the water pump as the magnesium block can react badly with corrosion

I think pretty much as simple as described. Personally i’d just reuse the existing bolt and apply a little engine oil on the solenoid o-ring before fitting.

Is there a particular trick to getting them back in? I cleaned mine recently, and it was the lords work getting them back in, getting the O ring to go back! Through the little gap between the radiator and engine I couldn’t really get the force!

Did you smear the o-ring with oil? if that doesn't help try fitting the o-ring in the head first the solenoids seem to have a chamfer that would help but the hole in the head doesn't. I've got a pair of new solenoids to fit I'll let you know how I get on :D
