vanos noise

Expensive job the BMW trial and error method.

I'm going to get them to have a listen to mine when it's in. Thankfully mine has a warranty so if they want to change the vanos then they can change away.

Itried this angle and put it to service manager.

If i was to get a comprehensive warranty would you rerplace my Vanos?

The answer is they would only replace the vanos if the part completely failed.....so no was my answer in my case.

Good to know that they would risk total engine failure rather than a little preventative maintenance.

Just been to see Phill at CPC, he had a listen and straight away said the vanos was on the loud side. Anywho, car's booked in for monday and will be staying with him for 2 days.
Will update you guys when it's done.

If he is going to open it up, might be worth getting hold of some besian parts (oil pump disc, anti rattle kit etc). Happy to let you have a listen of my vanos I'm in NW London.

Thanks for that Viren, i figured he'd be supplying the parts too if need but will speak to him and grab some of the parts you suggested.

I have an odd ticking that has just developed on my M Coupe. I knew about the Vanos rattle from 2,800 to 3,100 RPM, I had that for months and I was OK with it. Then in the last couple of weeks a new ticking has developed. It sounds tappety best way I can describe it. It is not really audible from 1000-2000 rpm but about 2000 - 4000 it is pretty loud and consistent through the revs. When I cruise at 60 in sixth you can constantly hear it in the background tick tick tick tick :x :headbang:

Took it to my indy who flushed the engine, replaced the oil as it was due, inspected and confirmed the vanos bolts are all present and correctly adjusted, listened to the vanos and wasn't particularly concerned about it. The valves were adjusted 10k miles ago and my indy said that once they are reshimmed they generally dont go off. He went on to say he had an 2003 m3 before with a similar tick, had stripped it all back, did the valves, did a load of work and it still ticked at the end.

So just for a second opinion took it to BMW and they confirmed it was an engine noise and didnt think it was vanos related. There recommendation? Valve adjustment at 340 quid as the next step.

So I am currently unsure what to do. If anyone has seen this before or can give me a clue what to do it would be great as I want to do something.

Sorry guys, been meaning to post an update on what happened with my car.
Had it booked in with Phill at CPCPE, very nice chap and very knowledgeable. He had a listen to my engine and straight away he pointed to my vanos.

Anyway he did a full vanos service and it turns out there was a part which was broken and had to be replaced. I can't remember what the part was called but i have a picture of it. Apparently a brand new one costs £600 from BMW but he had a refurbished one which he was happy to replace for me at a good price.

All in all he had my car for 4 days and my bill was £987.

Broken Part

The old boy getting an exhaust adjustment :D

I would urge all //M owners to keep an eye out for an change in engine noise as apparently if your vanos goes caput it's a very expensive job.

Bumped into a fellow member who was having Phill inspect his vanos for him.

All in all car drives like a dream and the engine is running smoothly with now weird noises :D

personaly while you were doing all that id have done a complete vanos overhaul with the upgraded besian / turbo toys hub and related gear.

There are a few threads on here about the rapid development of tappety sounds. The cam follower case hardening is very thin and can wear prematurely leading to severe cam lobe wear. If you have an intrusive tick, take it to Phil at CPC Performance Engineering in Amersham (as per Minihen's VANOS post above) and ask him to have a look / listen. New followers now may save you from needing new camshafts too.

Many thanks for this I will give Phil a call asap and arrange a visit so he can have a listen!! :driving:

You'll struggle to get hold of him  Your best hope is to call as early as possible after they open

Glad you got it sorted, those tabs have broken on various s54. I got re drilled holes in the oil pump disc so that would no longer happen.

Glad you got this sorted Viren, just out of interest at what mileage did this happen? Has the car had normal use too

Think he did all that, loads of parts listed on my bill

Another option for this is Reddish in Gloucestershire i think. Mine will be going in here later this year for a vanos overhaul when it needs servicing. I know its noisy and occasionally drops power, but figured i would kill 2 birds with one stone when its time for oil change etc.

I actually did mine as a maintenance/preventative job, when they took my vanos apart all was actually well. Think it was Minihen_LDN who had the broken tab. However the tabs on the oil pump can and have snapped on other s54s aswell. The problems arises if the broken bit falls in the engine (usually the broken tab just gets stuck in the oil pump disc so no biggy).
