VANOS issues on N52?

Hi All,

Looking for some help, had check engine light come on and bought a scanner that reveals the below.

Symptoms before this light came on suggested Vanos was dodgy, with a slightly lazy engine to 3k then serious power after that.

I have an early 3.0si e85 with N52, built March 2006. The intel I could see was suggesting that M54 engine was the VANOS issues.

Any recommendations on what to do? I’m a fairly beginner mechanic but willing to give it a go if the job isn’t too scary!

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, you could remove the vanos solonoids & give them a clean up, that’s been known to sort a fair few vanos issues.
It’s free as well, only spend money if you have to! :P

Smartbear beat me to it again! Yes, search vanos solenoids on here. Cheap and easy diy fix (I would buy new rather than trying to clean).

Hi both, thanks for replying, sounds like it’s a good first step. I’ll probably try cleaning them at first, as it doesn’t seem a nightmare job to get them in and out.

Any recommendations on replacement solenoids? Would you just go to BMW for an OEM part? If so anyone got the part number? I’ve heard these are circa £90ish inc VAT?

Around a week ago I got that dreaded EML, was a similar Vanos related code. Had the AA come out, ran his cumputers and said the car was running totally fine at that point. Only note was that EML was triggered twice 8km apart.

Local Indy just cleaned the solenoids, have driven about 30 miles since and no EML since or a lack of power
