VANOS improvement, yay!

Just wanted to share for anyone thinking of biting the billet and having their Vanos seals replaced (either tackling themselves or getting a garage to do it), the improvement in the rev range and near the top end is very much worth while. My Z4 has about 127k on the clock and garage said the seals where totally shot, so we’ll chuffed I got them done.

I did start to attempt the job myself, but bailed part way into it, as you have those moments of knowing when your hitting your skill limits, and after loosing three tools in the engine bay, there’s wisdom in knowing when to call it quits!

Ps new to the forum, but had my Z for a few years having brought it as a project that needed some complex work doing with ecu’s etc, that I could do thankfully.

Welcome David!!

Glad you got the vanos done ok! I told you it would make a difference!

Cheers Stuart, and next on the list a few things the garage pointed out, but also retro-fit cruise control and if srhutch you still make the looms I’d be interested…

How much did the job cost?

Also where did you get the seals from when attempting DIY? Looking at doing the same on mine at some point.

This was the kit I used https://x8r.co.uk/bmw-double-twin-dual-vanos-seals-upgrade-repair-set-kit-m52tu-m52-m54-m56-with-gaskets.html

Cost from garage with me providing the kit, and Inc vat was £345 which I thought was reasonable, using an indi.

Did start to tackle myself, but struggled with access. To the front of the vanos, and after dropping three tools in engine bay I know to call it quits, I was having a dippy/clumsy day. There’s lots of good guides out there and x8r also have good guides on their site about how to tackle the job.
