For the record my milage is 24,500 on a 2007 with full BMW service history.

i mean... jesus thats no mileage really... you got off lightly OP.

Road bearings are a consumable item on the s54, low capacity high rev motor, its one of those things... vanos is a little scary but luckily their are some really good aftermarket parts now to really beef up the week parts..

OP this is a exhaust hub fail.

and the updated vanos parts in all their glory being installed and compared to the stock pieces.

Any uk suppliers of upgraded vanos units (exhaust side)?

Someone told me Dr. Vanos had set up a franchise over here. Not seen anything but if it's as good as the US guy is meant to be it'll be good.

Ouch. Once fixed you should notice a big difference in running, it seems to creep up for a while before causing an issue. There was a car behind me at Duxford (I can't remember the forum name or I'd have contacted them) that when they started up there was a definite VANOS rattle.

It was Andy (AZ4MW)

Was that at the end of the day (leaving) or when in the holding area as we went in (entering) as I was behind Stuart on the stand but not in the holding area, I can't hear anything rattling on start up but may be I'm not aware of the noise it sounds all ok to me, runs perfect and power immense, will have to go out tomorrow now and have a real good listen :o

Phil @ CPC Performance Engineering (Amersham area) is a VANOS expert - worth a call if any doubts/questions.

what i want to know is do any of these uk companies offer the upgraded hubs, seals, solenoids, or are they just replacing stock parts??

It was as you were leaving. Nothing severe, but worth getting it looked at. Steve and I both noticed it and I then started mine up to listen to see if it was the same. By the time I was sure yours was rattling a little you'd gone.

We checked mine as well Andy. Worth getting it looked at just to be sure.

It's about the only thing I worry about on the S54.

Thanks Stuart I will get it checked out, I took the ///M out yesterday at 7.15am for nice early morning hoon (no traffic) and it drives like a dream, I wait till the oil is at full temp before any power is applied and then it puts the biggest smile on my face EVER

UPDATE:

Managed to get my car over to Daren Wood today. Having used them before I was confident leaving my car with them

When I arrived they had the part they thought would solve the problem. However after fitting it didn't solve the issue.

So I've now left the car with them, they are going to strip the main vanos down and rebuild using parts from the USA.

Should have the car back in a week or so's time.

Very impressed that took the time to try and solve the issue there and then. DW is a very busy place. 3 week wait if you call to book in now!

Just can't wait to have my car back driving perfect again!

Vanos now removed and a seal on the exhaust side wasn't holding pressure when tested.

They are going to refurbish the unit with new seals etc and also replace some bolts that are known to be an issue.

All been well I should be picking it up next Thursday!

Popey was in Darren Woods earlier didn't see your z ?

Mine was bad news needs Roof Rams ! Not a motor £300 per side booked back in in two weeks !
