Vanos filter

I fitted vanos filter and the 2 seals needed today..

i forgot to take pics, but this really is a 10 minute job once you have sorted out your tools..

There was definatly grit and debris in the filter so is certainly worth doing as a preventative measure...My car has 59k with full BMW service history and i have changed the oil twice in the last 6 months(mainly becuase i have a barrel of 10w60's at my disposal)..

Cheap job at £14...

Yep, did mine at about 20k and then again earlier this year.

The dealer asked what I wanted it for and I pointed out that there was no point in having a filter there if it isn't meant to catch anything. Thus if it does catch something then it should be checked/replaced.

Agreed..

Tools needed..

22mm socket and ratchet
Pair of pliers to pull off the filter.
Small flat headed screwdriver to help remove and replace "O" rings..

good work chaps keeping on top of those little jobs
all helps to keep performance motors in tiptop order . i'm impressed :)

Is there a How To Guide for this? Mine is on 29k so probably worth it now! Still getting to know my way around the engine bay, so pictures would be a great help!

did this on my s50 z3mr , can i do this on the m coupe without dropping the oil or does it have to be done at oil change, have changed my oil 300miles ago, thanks

You dont really need to do that..

Just put a rag under the bolt that you remove... At the very most a teaspoon of oil may escape..

In fact when i did mine, nothing of any significance escaped..

Don't think you'll need to do this until you've reach 60K or beyond. Most that have changed their vanos filter under 30K had reported it to be unnecessary as it was still very clean.

My car is on 28k - should I be thinking of doing this? I assume it was done as part of the run in?
It's not replace by BMW at any service. They don't class it as a service item.

If you want it done, then they will do it for you, or you can spend 10 minutes and do it yourself.

Xmetal , you are spot on there , I don't know why there is such a worry about changing this as its just not necessary for many miles . Ask an indy they will tell you !
