Vanos Filter Changed Today !!!!

Yes if you want. Just with a small brush in some diesel fuel or something like that. It's a piece of metal mesh in a plastic retainer.

But I advise to change the o rings on the feed if you dismantle this, as they harden over time (the vanos gets hot and the oil is hot). Reusing them can cause a leak because they will not seat in properly a 2nd time. (you can see in the second pic that the o ring has flattened)

And as said, it's only £10 or so, and if the plastic housing should break as you get it off the feed to clean you can go to the dealership again. So getting a new filter after inspection is up to ones personal choice, but it's not necessary per se. For this cheap part it's a good option (you have to get the o rings anyway), but if you tinker a lot on your car you make these decisions constantly as cleaning can become pretty profiteable when handeling more expensive parts.

But most reports on these kinds of filters are that they're clean, so it's not necessary to check them on a regular basis (it doesnt hurt but I can think of hundreds of things that you could check on a regular basis with more urge imho). They only get dirty if your engine has a problem. Especially with polluted oilcanals (high mileage and not so frequent oil changes)

Were you not tempted to replace the seals in the vanos sealing plate at same time?

As I'm hearing that these can go and let oil round them etc
As I'm tempted even though low mileage to do a besian seal kit /replace bolts for updated and the filter plus it's seals as doesn't look like a hard job, just a careful one :)

Thoughts welcome

Go for it, if you do the 'Stage 1' seals / solenoid pack it's a straight forward job for anyone remotely handy with a spanner.
There's a good guide for this on Cutters at the mo:

The other seals in the VANOS itself, piston / oil hub jobs are a bit more involved and require re-timing of the engine which can be a bit more daunting depending how confident you are. Oh, and if you go this far into it you may as well do the valve clearances while your in there, another job that's worth keeping on top of.

Yeah I was looking at just doing seals myself
Then maybe later down the line the internal bits
As car near 20k so not major

But the rubber does go:)
