VANOS - DIY??

Ok, so I can occasionally hear a tiny ticking from the vanos area after a hard run, and as the car has just clicked over 60k I am going to do the vanos seals as my next job.

Has anyone used it? Where did you get the bits?

Just looked and it seems he only sells the o rings and not the other seals that sit beneath them.

Edit. Zooming in I can see all of the rings, they just aren't mentioned in the description.

Except for the anti rattle kit, as that was (back in the days....) only available at beisan.
(If you're keeping your engine stock, the anti rattle kit is imho also not necessary. Only if you install performance camshafts)
Beisan stuff is expensive with all the shipping, VAT etc getting it from the US into europe.

Cheers for that. Mr Vanos probably gets his from there and puts an 80% mark up on them!

I got the i6 kit looked easy enough to fit until I came to remove the vanos unit (the first step :rofl: ) I gave up and got my mate to do it...

The actual vanos rebuild is dead easy ifyou are comfortable removing the vanos

Lol - I'm going to fit the new water pump that has sat in the garage for a couple of months too.

The pessimistic OCD in me doesn't like anyone working on my cars at all, unless it's completely beyond my capabilities.

I'll be ordering the kit from i6 that [ref]GuidoK[/ref] mentioned, and cracking on with it hopefully, next weekend.

Ok, so I have ordered my VANOS rebuild kit from i6, along with a DISA upgrade kit too, and I'll be swapping my water pump at the same time, as there is a tiny leak from the bearing.

Question is, I know I'll need the "rocker cover" gasket, as mine is also leaking at the back as they do, but I've also seen s "VANOS gasket" too, will I need this?

Totally agree with the OCD comment above, no one but me or my mate at his garage. I wont even let him put a member of his staff on it!
I got my kit from i6 and I got their disa kit and did that the same time. Its not that hard and I agree usually the rattle rings issue seems to effect the american ZHP models that have different cams in. However in this case if you think you've got a rattle from the vanos I would definitely spend the extra and do the rattle kit. I did the rattle kit on mine, but again I think that was OCD but I certainly didn't want to have to do the job twice in the unlikely advent that the rattle developed. At least in your case if you do it you will have ruled out the rings if you still have a noise.

I used the beisan system guide on their site and its pretty good. Worst bit on the zed is clearance to the cross member which isnt an issue on the e46 so that slowed me down a bit when I did mine.
 
Hve also ordered both gaskets, and these;

As I've noticed a few people saying you need a long set of angled one's, these are 11" so I presume should be fine?

AND a couple of decent magnetic pick up tools, just in case...

You dont need a long set imho, just that its angled long enough (and that it has a good grip at the point). I did it with normal angled pliers.
Its needed to get those 2 little cups out of the front that mask the bolts that hold the vanos cups.
 
I've ordered a long set too, but only because they were cheaper than standard! :?
Not ordered the rattle rings... hopefully mine are okay... :)
 
Take lots of photos along the way please Mike. This is something I need to tackle but keep putting off. Will be interested in hearing any short cuts or tips you find along the way :thumbsup:

If you manage to find a 30 minute method of doing this I'm sure another trip to Peterborough will be in order :D

I read its good practice to replace the vanos gasket as its a metal crush type. The two washers included are also crush washers for the oil feed into the vanos, might as well stick new ones in while you're in there, for the sake of £8 or so.

The pliers you ordered too are the same ones I used, perfect size to get in to the caps.
