Wow ! I remember as a kid in the mid 70s my old Dad taking me to an airshow at RAF Woodford near Stockport and a Harrier doing similar during its routine whilst 'hovering' over the runway ! :o

Operating outside of runway classification. Prob only suitable for light prop aircraft.

I worked on the Typhoon fighter years ago, mechatronics for the control surfaces and munitions handling. Got to see some configuration testflight takeoffs at BAE Warton and on one occasion witnessed an aborted takeoff. That made quite a mess of the runway! Pilot ejected safely although i thought he was toast initially as i didnt see him eject, only the gentle decent of his parachute after following the fireball rolling down the runway.
Was nothing to do with me,i'm absolutely sure of it :?

That's gonna cost someone a few bob. :o I'm guessing he landed some place else.

There's an interview afterwards with I think the airfield manager who said the runway was checked and by the pilot and deemed safe but it was going to be resurfaced soon anyways so no harm done

I think the pilot was pretty lucky not to have lost the tail.

Halfpenny green airport is about 5mins from me
There were planes going overhead all day long that day. Its usually just small 2 seaters and training helicopters.
