Valvetronic gasket issue

Hi all,
My valvetronic gasket was leaking on my 2006 E86..
I bought a new elring one, fitted it, a few drives later it’s leaking again.

I’ve just taken off the valvetronic motor again and the gasket has pretty much come off in two parts. The inner metal plate has come away from the main rubber body.
I’ve offered it up to see how this could be and there seems to be a gap from where the gasket would be and where it had to mate against of around 5-6mm…
It doesn’t seem as though there would be enough give in the rubber to allow it to reach the face once you mount the motor and tighten it up.
Pics attached

Has anyone else experienced this? Have I got the wrong gasket?

All help appreciated! IMG_3212.jpegIMG_3208.jpeg

It's like the valve cover is too far 'away' from the valvetronic mating surface which is fixed to the head, so once you tighten the motor down it tears the gasket.
There should be a little give in the rubber between the inner metal part and the outer part, to allow for some tolerance but 5-6mm is too much to ask for the gasket to cope with.

I notice some gasket glue in the 2nd photo indicating a valve cover replacement has been done at some point..
Maybe it has a non-oem valve cover that wasn't quite to spec?

Thank you very much for the reply!
I ended up figuring this out.. a new valve cover gasket and a new valvetronic gasket later, it’s all sorted!
It had obviously been fitted on the skew previously so it just needed shifting over and torquing 👍
