Valvetronic actuator

The 28i I am planning to buy failed just one check. There was a stored code relating to the valvetronic actuator. The dealer is replacing it, and the engine warning light was NOT on. Should I run away very fast? It is on a 63 plate and has done 68,000 miles.

After 10 years, unless they've been reset, ECUs end up with all sorts of codes that are nothing more than random glitches. Any code recorded more than, say, 500 miles ago is pretty well irrelevant.

That they're replacing the actuator is a point in favour of buying it - any other similar car you buy won't have a nice shiny new one.

Also, problems aren't contagious. If the valvetronic motor dies it doesn't then mean the vanos solenoids are then about to expire. It's a non-causal event.

Thanks Scott. I am trying to get the actual code to see if that provides any further info. Yes, it is good they are replacing it, but I wondered if it could have caused further damage. On reflection, if it had, then I expect there would be other fault codes as well.

DonDon,

For as much as you pay a third party to work on your car and bug them for codes. Just buy a code reader - should be pinned at the top of each E89 forum. Bimmergeeks Protool, Bimmerlink, Foxwell, etc. It will leave you with more information to bring to the forum, to your mechanic, or to make your own decisions by. If your check engine light wasn't on, it's as likely that a previous mechanic never reset a code as it is a new code. Be informed and check yourself - and gain personal power!

The car is a 2.5 hour drive away - I haven't bought it yet. The only code was 2DD6 Valvetronic servomotor, position sensors: Shortcircuit or line break (open circuit). With the unit replaced, it doesn't seem to be a reason to run away.

I am planning to take it for a test drive tomorrow and probably part with my hard-earned and drive it home.
