I pulled into the garage yesterday evening to the smell of hot oil. I checked the dipstick on my 2003 3.0i and it was a quart low. After further investigation I found an oil mess on the plate just below the valve cover gasket on the passenger side of the vehicle near the back of the engine.
The car has low miles 38k, but I imagine that age plays into this gasket failure as well. I'm mechanically inclined but no engine expert by any means. Is this something I should consider tackling myself or should I leave it to the professionals?
Also, are there any other things I should consider doing at the same time such as replacing the oil filter housing gasket? Any recommendations or advice is greatly appreciated.
