Valuation help

Hi all, after what I thought was a fairly minor rear end shunt in stop / start motorway traffic, I've just been advised by my insurers that the vehicle is beyond economical repair.

It's a 2003 2.5, 78k miles, service history, good condition

Any thoughts on what would be a reasonable valuation? Finding it hard to get a realistic replacement value as the Glasses guide price is nowhere near what I'm seeing them advertised for?

Has anybody ever bought back from the insurers to repair themselves? What price did you pay?
After a cursory examination by myself I didn't think the damage was that bad, but am now waiting for the engineer's report.

Thanks

I doubt the damage is that bad. Just that insurers insist on new parts and professional repairs and that immediately equates to about what the car is worth.
Depending on what the offer is, I'd be tempted to consider buying it back and getting it sorted yourself. If it's a common colour then you should be able to find the panels you need ok.
See what the engineer says regarding any important structure that may be damaged first.
Shame you're way down in the West Country, or I'd suggest a certain Lincoln member who could help out.

Hey bigwinn, fancy a few days B&B in Somerset?

Not much help now, but with an older car in good condition, you want to get guaranteed agreed value insurance in place so it doesn't get written off for even minor damage.

It's a hassle to arrange, but worth it when bad things happen.

Rear bumpers in titan should be easy enough. And the rear crash bar. Maybe PDC if you have it might be a bit of a pain.

But you're looking at a couple hundred quid IMO. Provided it was a relatively slow nudge like you say (and the boot hasn't been damaged). Wait for the engineers report but I'd look to buy it back either way.

Even if fixing isn't for you, you can always stick it up here or ebay. Will be snapped up to fix or for parts.

If it is not your fault and they are insured then consider going after them - as they have no such 'market value' agreement with you

Thanks for your replies, engineer's report didn't list anything major so I've bought it back. Once I get it home I'll start looking for a replacement bumper, and order up the new bits that are needed.
Think I'll take the opportunity to fit rear parking sensors whilst I'm at it 😃

Hi, any recommendations for the best mail order parts supplier? I'm in the Southwest and my nearest dealer is 40+ miles away.
Thanks

FWIW I was unable to arrange agreed value insurance on my Z4C last year - since it's not modified and not at least 15 years old it couldn't be insured on a modified policy, or on a modern classic policy. If anyone knows of any insurers that will do agreed value on a 2009 unmodified car, I'd love to know!

If you mean BMW dealers I've had parts posted from both Cotswold BMW and Sopers of Lincoln. They both give a discount if you mention the forum too.

Hi Cotterz, my 2008 2.0i was written off about 4 months ago.
I bought it back at 28% of the insurance payout. Unfortunately l was stupid enough to let slip that it was at home and not in some breakers yard with battery out and fluids drained.
Beware the loss adjusters! What ever you decide mate good luck. Peter

I've used Quarry for BMW before, http://www.quarrymotors.co.uk/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw29CRBhCUARIsAOboZbIWOdHtM00Ge7WDJqDdhhy0QGeZPSSB33qM6IZfBUuIRmZSC-r1344aApXDEALw_wcB

Thanks for all your replies. Car was delivered back to me today (buy back was roughly the cost of the tyres I put on 6 months ago)
Will take the bumper off tomorrow and get the parts ordered.😃
