V8 Mustang rental in US and A

Went to miami about 8 years ago now I done exactly that. Booked a convertible mustang months before I left when I got there there was no mustangs available,, as people rent them for a few days then just don't bother taking them back, I had the right hump and kicked off they upgraded me to a 350 E class that was fully loaded with double panoramic sunroof, which by the end of the holiday I was actually glad about it as the roads in miami and florida are absolute dog s**t.
Just be aware though you might book a mustang but it might not actually be there when you land

I booked one a few years ago when in California. Hertz at LAX had loads of them. You can haggle a bit on price at the desk if you don't pre-book, also be aware they'll do a hard sell on the insurance which you don't need.
One thing I would recommend though is making sure you get a manual transmission. Mine had the 10 speed slushbox and it ruined the car. It still sounded great but the slushbox made it uneventful and made the car feel slow.
Also all the converible ones I saw were the V6. The convertible would be nice in Cali but the V6 is pointless.

Two years ago booked a mustang convertible at Miami airport - but they did say they couldn’t guarantee a mustang but at least 3 were available on the day.
I wasn’t bothered about a V8 ( look at the V6 performance figures) - there was one V8 available.
It was one of the big hire companies ( Avis?)

Yes watch out for insurance scams even from the big rental companies.
I paid up front for a convertible a few years ago, on arriving at LAX I was offered an inferior model and only got my convertible after a lot of shouting and insistence. They then tried to sell me extra insurance for ‘being hit by an uninsured driver’, which I declined.

I think without the V8 burble the car is just a 2 door Mondeo. I had a GT for about a week and did some big miles in it and every night after parking up I could still hear the lumpy V8 ringing in my ears.
Yes, me too. I booked a mustang (or "equivalent") with Hertz at Las Vegas. When I arrived at the desk they said there were no mustangs left, only the v8 mustang which "was not equivalent" to the mustang I had booked. I argued for a while but got nowhere. its a cheap trick to make you upgrade - instead I got a 4 year old 46,000 miler dodge camaro convertible instead (how often do they replace these?). I was not happy at all with that after expecting a mustang... They said I should have called ahead, but I suspect that makes no difference at all. Unless you can get a guaranteed model, just be ready to be disappointed! 
Maybe Hertz will offer a guarantee on the v8 as its a premium car - I'd check...

If you're arriving at normal business hours it would be best to have a walk around all the hire outlets and have a look what each has to offer.
You might struggle at JFK though, it's not the sort of place people hire Mustangs. Maine does have some nice roads though so worth getting something fun.

a few years ago played car hire roulette with a 'managers special' at hertz in san diego. turned out to be a convertible mustang. great fun for a week cruising through national parks and up to san francisco - though it was only the rental spec, which i believe was a 4cyl ecoboost, paired with a 10 speed slushbox that was forever changing gear.
about to play car hire roulette again in miami, to drive down the florida keys... another convertible mustang would be just the ticket, but not really fussed as long as its got an auto box and aircon.
