V5 and SORN

Just wondering if anyone has any advice for me.

I'm trying to help my dad out. He had an old Bedford Viva van he used to use for work. He scrapped it way back in 1990 before you had to declare SORN or tell DVLA you'd scrapped it, but kept the v5 registered to him.

It had an interesting number plate that would be great if we can keep and use on his current car. As far as DVLA know the car could be sitting rotting in a garage somewhere.

Does anyone know what I would need to do to try and keep the reg number?

Thanks in advance :)

If you still have a valid V5 (even if the car is a non-runner), you should be able to sign the registration number over to another vehicle, or put it on retention. They don't need to inspect either vehicle to do this. Do a search for the correct form. From memory, it costs £105 to put on retention or a bit less (£80?) to transfer over to another car directly.

When the vehicle was scrapped the registration number would have been taken out of circulation and cannot be used. The V5 you have is no longer valid as it is now a V5C.
if you wanted to transfer the reg no. to another vehicle, both vehicles are subject to being examined by the DVLA and would both need an MOT.
I made the same enquiry some time ago as I had some interesting reg plates from some old tractors and made enquiries with DVLA who told me it cannot be done.
You could always ring them in case anything has changed but I seriously doubt it.

If he hasn't told DVLA its scrapped You might be on to something.
However have you had any information telling you that you should have sorned it or does the vehicle predate the manadatory tax? (01/01/73)

If you try and say you still have it and it wasn't scrapped, won't you possibly risk getting a fine for failing to SORN it for the period of time since SORN became active?

I don't know.. I think I read something that said if it's not been taxed or SORNed after 1998 then it's exempt? It's all very confusing! DVLA don't know it's been scrapped because it was in the days when you didn't SORN anything and it was just scrapped with the local scrappy!
