Using Oil?

Hi, my yellow oil light came on yesterday for a top up but I'm sure I am doing this every 1000 miles (a VERY rough guess). I cannot find any evidence of a leak so is this normal usage? I thought the RX-8 was the only car that "used" oil?

Seems high usage. However IIRC there was a thread on this not too long ago where someone else had a similar issue. If you have a search you might find the thread.

It's not unheard of for the 3.0i to use oil.....

Cheers I'm not too fussed as its not exactly a lot and as I said not too often anyway. The wife was only doing 2000 miles a year but now I've swapped my 335d for the Z I think it will jump to 10k so if i'm topping up more than once a month i might have it looked at........

Either that or I'll tell her to shoehorn the babyseat in the Z and get my car back!!!!!

Mine used oil up untill 29,000 miles then just seemed to stop to top up every 5000. think after haveing bmw motorbikes this seems the norm.allthough my e46 never uses any. what is the milage.

Could be a screwed-up oil breather system. That can cause increased oil usage. Replacment of the oil breather valve is suggested to be a cure.

What oil are you using?

Our 3.4 engine does use oil (known consumption, so classed as normal) at around 1l/1000miles using 0W30 oil. It is suggested by Buchloe (Alpina HQ) that high consumption of oil can be alleviated by a change to 10W60 oil.

RX-8's didn't use oil, they devoured it

Any idea of a cost for this as I have it in for work on the ckunking noise from the rear (thanks to the hints on this forum) so may have them do this as well??

v7jco the Z does use oil iam forever putting oil in and so have others i think its about norm i have used several different oils between changes and there all perform the same so i wouldnt worry about using halfords oil , iam sure its made by one of the big boys just in there own packaging but iam sure some one will be along to put me right :D
Interesting to know about the oil breather filter.

Parts are around £70 I believe for the valve and pipes. Should be something you can do yourself....on the ALPINA forum,it's a common link with high oil consumption on the 3.2/3.3/3.4 engine at these sorts of mileages. Think I'll be doing this at some stage, too, to keep things under control.

Oh, and nothing wrong with Halfrauds own oil. I used it in my RX-8 as Mazdas own was too dear to throw down the exhaust pipe.

HTH

I think I'll wait and record properly how many miles I do between top ups and go from there with next service.... I might be being paranoid.... It may be a bit like I feel like I have to put fuel in either car EVERY time after my wife has used it..............
Cheers for the info though, now I am going to be using it full time I'll get a better idea

I'd say theres a 75% chance its your oil filter housing... Use a white LED/Xenon torch and look at the engine block & cylinder head from between the oil filter and inlet manifold (you can 'just' see it).

Mine has high oil usage and the block is dark gold coloured suggesting the oil filter housing seal is failing. VERY common on M54's, usually caused by over/improper tightening of the oil filter cap, which twists where the housing meets the block.

DIY fix in a few hours and a new gasket for a few quid...

You can check your PCV system by removing the oil cap and placing your hand over the hole. If you feel a slight sucking, it should be fine :)
