Useful fact

Hi Forum,

Do you know why the bmw symbol is contrasting quarter circles? Pre the war bmw made planes, and the circle represented a rotating propeller on a blue sky, after the war they weren't allowed to make planes so decide to give cars a go...

The rest is history. Is this true? Do we have any z4 lovers out there that are bmw historians?

Comments welcome.

That has been debated for years...
The other story is that blue and white are the colors in the Bavarian flag
GERM005.gif

BMW = Bavarian Motor Works

According to the series "Ultimate Factories" - BMW use to tell their customers that it was the spinning prop. Later they discovered in their historical records that it was actually the Bavarian flag.

That information is found at the 44 minute marker in the series.

Why were they not allowed to make planes?
The Treaty of Versailles which ended WWI did not allow Germany to have an Air Force. They were not allowed tanks either. I am pretty sure they were allowed to mfg airplane but none for military use. More useful facts... :thumbsup:

But the Boxer engine from the motorcycles makes an excellent light aircraft engine - air cooled, low revs and high torque.

Ummmm i'm trying to think when this fact would be useful?
Pub quiz 'Why is the bMW symbol blue and white?'
And another?

In my BMW book from the museum it states it is a "rotating propellor" ...

I got that book in 1975.

True or not, I'm going the propeller route because it has a high level of awesomeness than just copying a flag. It also makes it easier to explain the circular shape of the logo.
