I have combined helpful posts from AlanJ and martinf into a used Z4 checklist.

Potential owners can print out the checklist and take it along when viewing a car:

If you have any common faults to look out for or other points to add please let me know and I'll update the list.

Pretty much spot on, but It could be worth a mention about the CDV. It makes the biting point of the clutch a bit vague, I had issues today pulling out of an unsighted junction on an incline, managed to stall it as I was trying to come off the brake and let the clutch out to get a quick get away, but failed miserablly, I'm having mine removed next month. Maybe a new buyer would think there could be an issue, I knew about it before I purchased as I read up on this forum!

Thought of another, if the car is advertised with " tophifi" or "carver amp" you can confirm this by checking by the battery that there is a thin black box alongside it, this is the carver amp. Other obvious check is sub woofers behind the seats instead of cubby holes.

My car had some random BMW amp in it, so no sound from the subs, and the cd changer worked but had no sound as it has a special connector that goes onto the carver amp, so if there is a loose wire by the amp it's been replaced with another just to get sound in the front speakers. I missed this but luckily bought the correct amp from a forum member in America, they are pretty rare to find at a decent price.
