Used values and mileage

I have noticed that there has been a bit of discussion about current values of ///M coupes on the forum recently and it made me curious about the effect of mileage .

It's clear that sub 30k mileage seems to have a positive effect ( from a sellers perspective ) on values but I wonder at what mileage the perception of 'over' use is seen to have a negative effect on value? >50k, 60k,70k??

Would the value an 07 car with 50k be more or less the same as an older 56 car but with less than 40k miles? Assuming all spec and history to be equal.

I'd be interested to see what people think.

Buyers market seems to be obsessed with mileage. Same can be applied to some discussions on here.

I think age has a minor impact on price. Most emphasis seems to be on mileage. However, just look the the white M coupe in the for sale section. 5 years without a service, yet due to 11k mileage it's up for sale at £26k?

Sub 60k miles means the car is a lot cheaper to enter into the BMW insured warranty im guessing that the further away it is from that the better.

Also anything that is 2008 or so with low mileage 20-30k will usually be just past an Ins I and will go for upto 4 years without an Ins service.

Discs usually need replacing at 40-45k.

All of this adds up and is reflected in the value as it is possible to buy a car do 7k miles a year and not have to worry about any consumbles or servicing aside from petrol, tyres and an oil service for upto 4 years.

As an example i purchased my car with 32k on having just had an oil service iv done approximately 9-10k miles in 19/20 months and haven't spent anything (discs were also new all round). After the Ins II service all my car will require in terms of servicing for the next 3.5-4 years with the mileage i do is an oil service and brake fluid change. Also my warranty will be around £55 a month if i have a £200 excess.
 
I think that people in the know realise that mileage has little bearing on the quality of the car but, for financial depreciation on selling on, it's better to have low mileage as possible...my two cents

I tend to agree - age has a minor impact (probably because it was a short production run), it's more mileage based. Anything over 60-70K tends to have a bigger impact on price. Sub 20-25k and the price premiums are alot stronger - almost bordering on the ridiculous.

Having only been on the site for 2 weeks I've been wondering why the mileages of many cars are so low? Seems a waste - if its to protect values - surely more fun to enjoy them as intended?
 
I sold my M coupe with 80k on for £14,500...

Prices seem to be up at the moment,but are any actually selling ?

Mine has just gone over 80k been offered 11k for it at bmw for a swap to a 335d on 40 plus k backed off as I know my car , its been cherished pampered and touch wood its only cost me a xenon bulb ! apart from services and in between oil changes as I like to flush the blood ! as the other poster said ! its a pretty bmw ! imo the prettiest ! I cant afford a z8 ! so drive those bad boys us ///M owners of a great car shouldn't imo make them garage queens ! if you can afford to ? hats off to you , but I saved , bought it , want to drive it ? always !
 
I'm of the opinion that a car should be enjoyed. Most people don't buy cars as an investment. Yes the ///M coupe is fairly low volume which adds to it's value and it's performance, looks and engine type add to it's desirability especially within a BMW fan base.

My MC is a third car and I hope to keep it for a longtime. It's a well speced 2007, 55k miles. full bmwsh car which I bought for 15.5k with BMW warranty last year. I bought it on condition rather than mileage, even though my criteria initially was sub 40k miles. I'm pleased with my choice though and current values make that still seem a fair price.

Interestingly a friend just bought a gen1 997 and mileage seemed to have little effect on price until you were north of 70k.
 
I paid £13,900 for my full spec m coupe in rare monaco blue with 52k on it last November only downside was small scratch on back bumper but nonetheless a decent price I thought. I don't think mileage is all important it's more about condition and how it's been looked after, I'd much rather a well maintained high miler than a low miles car that's been abused. If given the right care these cars should run forever with minimal depreciation to performance.
 
My opinion obviously

Drive it, enjoy it, look after it, keep the servicing straight…

There are the opisate ends:

Garage queens with no milage and washed/polished so much you can just about see the metal through the paint. lol

Drivers cars, driven at any opportunity, higher milage and never cleaned, work horses.

Its all about balance :wink:

A well looked after car with high or low milage doesn't matter as long as after inspection its how you would like it. There are a lot of standards here. Milage doesn't seem to matter too much, as long as servicing is done correctly and milage is within reason.
