I don't think you will want my under-powered and standard 2.5i Sport (compared to yours) with rusty calipers.

My buddy just ordered direct from a main dealer and with a bit of my help got the price down by £2,000 from list. Took a lot of arguing and negotiation. Delivery July, so deals are already there

What did he order? What is the total purchase price before discount?

I don't know the spec beyond a deep red colour, manual with some extras such as a brushed ally dash. It will be a smaller engined model knowing him, but when I get time will see the full spec. IIRC it was £23 plus his for £8k, making it a total of £31k discounted then to £21 to trade.

It certainly was not the top spec knocked down slightly.

Reagarding the price of the new Z4 my dealer said it was just there margin to play with, around £1,500 but the more options you add the more discount you can get.

I thought that unless they don't need to (i.e. so much demand that there are waiting lists) the dealers will play with their margin which is about 8% on the sale, plus another 8% which BMW gives at the end of the year on all sales as a total. So as a business (this is what a friend of mine who used to work in a BMW dealer told me) they play with the first 8% if they need to for a sale, but don't ever touch the other 8%.

Anyway - this could be bullsh*t, but when I was pricing up my wife's 3 series, I was looking at either new or an ex-demo; Cooper would upfront do 8% off, but that was as much as they would do which didn't come close to the ex-demo.

Give it a month and the dealers will discount the new Z4 like any other car that doesn't have a waiting list...

IMHO when sales are sh*te they do anything to sell cars just to move metal and achieve monthly targets and bonuses, evenif they make a loss on the sale. they know trhey will get service, warranty work, etc. and a possible 5 year customer.

The figures my buddy got are real world on a deal at a local dealer for a brand new Z4 to order, with no trickery beyond showing them the web price of the same car and a hard fought reluctance to pay more.

I agree, the only other thing I would do if buying new would be to visit my two local dealers and play one off against the other, that has only got to help as well.

Actually this was done withthe help of Wondermike who provided me a couple of sites for internet sale. I passed these on and am told that the one he used charges a fee of £350 once the purchase is completed. They shop around all the main agents in a reverse auction and find the cheapest offer for the desired spec., then connect the 2 parties to handle the sale.

In this instance he simply took the lowest quote to his local dealer (who he wanted to stay with) and offered them the 'match it or goodbye' treatment.) The order was duly agreed

Def the way I'd go next time as frankly the dealer can rubbish the websites, instill whatever fears he likes, argue about price, but end of the day it will still be a BMW supplied direct to customer sale with all the warranties and service, just at discount.

Was it www.autoebid that he used?
