Does you work place have a cycle to work scheme?

Failing that 6 miles in MK is what about 15mins? Surely thats long enough to get the oil warm? I would just use the Z and park somewhere far away.

Especially summer coming driving home in a jazz, or driving the Z? :driving:

The money you'll save can pay to pop out any door dings you get !!

For me, I cannot buy any car that will cost less than £1500 a year to run. I work 1 mile from home and walk 3 times a week, drive the other 2 as I go to play badminton straight after work.

I should find an alternative but walking in the cold after playing is probably not a good idea and I dont think cycling would work either. As long as you're doing 1 reasonably journey a week to balance it out, then it should be fine to drive.

If you're willing to pay the costs..

I've already posed that question. Actually it's a 6 mile round trip. So 3 mile distance is ideal to cycle. Some folk would walk or jog that. Personally I wouldn't consider purchasing another vehicle for that short trip. He's going to use his Zed for all his other journeys.

Suzuki Swift, cheap as chips and just don't go wrong........wife's one is on 147,000 miles runs and drives fine, little 903cc , 3 cylinder engine for the win ( 60 mpg) cheap tax too

The 'ringo' parking scheme gives a big discount for workers in the centre, but it only allows for purple parking and not red, if anyone is familiar with MK. So still have some walking to do :D
I just checked via route planner and it's actually a little over 4 miles by road one way.

I'm so used to my car I don't really want to walk or cycle. Been there and done it and in mild weather it's fine, but not in snow, ice, pissing rain etc. If it was a beautiful day I'd probably still drive the Zed.

As aquazi says, the alternative is to pay to get parking dings out every so often. It's a tricky one as it would be handy to have a daily runner for the rubbish weather. The costs will be offset somewhat by the fuel saving over a period of time, and reduced wear and tear on the Zed. Under big assumption that the daily runner doesn't suffer too many visits for repairs.

Of course the most logical thing to do is move the Zed on  But I don't want to do that

Love the little 0.7l Roadster btw!

Thanks for all the recs btw

I'm going to stay away from German cars though. The reliability isn't great from my experiences and family's. Horns stopping working, vital parts flooding due to design fault, mirror glass dropping out, electrics shutting down because the battery goes flat

My Dad runs a Passat. The engine is great but he has had a lot of issues with ancillary items. Water ingress, lights playing up, central locking playing up etc. I guess there may be model differences. I had a Golf GTi a few years ago and that needed a new gearbox = nearly £2K bill.

If this is your first time with a second car, remember to add in the extra Cost of insurance, as you only have 1 car's worth of no claims. Look at multi car policies to try and reduce this.

Avoid 10 year old Fords unless they are totally rust free. The swift is a good shout, or its slightly bigger brother the Baleno if you can find one.

Yes, it would be my first 'second car'. I ran an insurance check on the Yaris just to sample. £199 best quote but that is declaring ncb. I read on here that there are some firms that will mirror ncb on a second car.

I've said before, for really short commutes, I'd buy something like a Honda C90 - park for free, incredibly reliable and dirt cheap to run.

Ive had a few cars and if you buy something old enough it can classify for classic insurance. Depends on the insurance company but some let me classify my 10 years + aged BMW as a classic for silly low insurance rates

So I started Monday and discover we're relocating further away soon! So I'll reassess from the new location. One drive home this week already with the roof down, such a pleasant way to end the day :)

Hello Montjeu.

I have 5 year old Punto that'll be up for sale in the next month or so. It'll be a little outside your price range but please DM me if you are interested. I've found it perfect for running around town and little 20 mile or so journeys.

Only reason for sale is mid life crisis purchase of zed!

Cheers.
