I currently have a 4GB memory stick in the car with music on it.

What are the rules for memory sticks? Is there a max size that the car will read? Any particular brand to avoid?

I'm thinking of getting a 32GB one to put all my iTunes music on - does this sound like it will work? And will it perform ok?

I have a 32gb in my 1 series, works fine.

Use with this app to export playlists and tunes from itunes

I have been testing a 32GB Corsair Flash Voyager in our car. It is a blue USB 2.0 one.

The car will recognise it and play the music on it. 256kbps AAC encoded .m4a files work! There is no need to recode to .mp3. Apple lossesless encoding doesn't work.

There is about 4GB of music on the memory stick along with a few GB of other files.

I have to spend more time learning how the car organises the music files it finds. It isn't the same as the iPod interface.

Just ordered a 32GB Sandisk Cruser Fit USB memory stick (its tiny, so doesn't really stick out from the usb port).

I'm gonna copy my whole itunes library to it and hope that works. Good to know the car will read a 32GB drive, just hope there isn't song limit or something, or that with 30GB of files, it doesn't slow down.

It may not be the same as the ipod interface, but with iDrive it looks similar enough to me to enable me to understand it.

It's coming from fleebay, so assuming the seller actually exists and I havent been conned, hopefully I'll have it later this week.

You should never buy memory using ebay. I learned that lesson a long time ago. :(

There is a useful utility on this site that will check to make sure it is legit.

I'm running 30gb of tunes on mine so it shouldn't be a problem as long as they are organised well, which the program I linked to above does.

Good point, I have bought a memory card before and it was fine. I'll check that site out. If I've been done over, then so be it...I will be upset though!

Dont worry, if its a fake, I'll be making a fuss!!!!

This is the item:

Is anyone running a physical hard drive connected via USB rather than a USB memory stick? I have close to 100GB of music on iTunes, so it would be great to be able to take a complete copy to have available in the Z4. I just wondered if the USB port has enough power to run a physical 2.5" HDD?

We are not picking our Z4 up to later this week, but coincidentally it's one of the questions my wife asked me this morning.

Steve.

Hmmm.... could be legit but the odds are against it. Play has this down as due for release on 1st July. Obviously it may have come from a legit source abroad.

I got stung a few times using ebay in the past. The last time I managed to get a refund through paypal without sending the memory cards back. That was the last time I purchased a memory card throught ebay.

If it turns out to be fake then you don’t have to return it. In fact I believe it is actually an offence to knowingly post counterfeit goods in the UK.

It does look like a good usb and I am tempted to replace my 8gb with one. I will wait for play or amazon to get it in though.

The USB port in the center console won't charge an iPad, so it may not have enough power for a spinning disk.

100GB? What is the sampling rate? High rate codecs like Apple losseless don't work.

iTunes library encoded with AAC Encoder 320 kbps and VBR encoding. This worked fine in our Mercedes CLS using the SD drive in the Command system.

I'll try out some different USB drives I have after we collect our Z4 later this week.

We'll see what happens, just read the ebay ad again, looks genuine....but then it would, wouldn't it!!!!

Only a few quid cheaper than play.com, so in hindsight I wish I'd known about that earlier, cos play.com is obviously going to be safer. Didn't realise it was a "new" product.

I've got a 160GB portable HDD (but its at work at the moment). I'll put some music on it tomorrow and try in the car. 100GB is a lot of music!!!

ive tonnes of music on my ipods / itunes (> 120gb) but i have never felt the need for more than a 20gb ipod in the car.
I prefer to have a selection of music i can stick on shuffle and be happy with whatever is chosen. i think i have something like 7gb (1200 songs)at present in the car on the HDD & the same 7gb on the usb. i use the usb set on shuffle & the HDD for selecting a specific album / artist.
I cant see the merit of having masses of music on either the HDD or a usb as it makes finding music difficult & only increases the likelyhood of having to skip a track because it is rubbish

edit.. and crashing car whilst browsing the calatogue! :poke:

I just use an old iphone :) Kinda glad I didn't go for extended storage now as I don't have the cupholders so more room for the likes of an ipod/iphone etc.

Tim.

We use a 6GB iPod mini in Deb's car (it was mine, but somehow got donated when she took over the 1'er). It works perfectly, and I briefly looked into getting a 2nd, but then decided to try the usb route, due to it being cheaper. Tried 4GB stick with no issues, so figured I might as well go the whole hog and put all music in the car, for £20!!!! Admittedly, most of it will never get accessed, and one of my concerns in having all the music is that it will take longer to find what I want...if that is an issue, I'll just delete some, but gonna start a max!

Wow, that site is confusing! Could do with a "user friendly Gok Wan" make-over!!!! So I looked at the newbies section, and read through the software it recommends. Am I correct in that it determines a drive as fake by effectively checking the size of the drive against the advertised size? The point being, a fake drive would have a lower capacity than it was sold as? i.e. my 32GB drive may only be 4GB? Do I need that program, or will a windows format of the drive tell me the same?
