USB Audio without iDrive?

I went to look over a 2010 23i today. The website ad (it's an AUC) says it has enhanced bluetooth telephone functionality and usb audio interface, but when I tried a USB stick with some MP3's on it, the head-unit just popped up a message saying "Insert USB". (I didn't get chance to try the BT)

The car doesn't have iDrive, so should this still work? If not, what's the USB port actually for? The sales guy didn't seem entirely sure if it should work or not...

I think it was FAT32, I'll check - works fine with an aftermarket radio in my current car. I'll see what he says and maybe take along a small one reformatted with a few test tracks on just to see if it's the stick I've got or a bigger problem.
As long as it's /supposed/ to work, that's the main thing!

Did you give it plenty of time to play?
Im sure ours gave the same message at the beginning but it was just us being impatient and it works fine now.
Im not sure butI think the bigger the memory stick the longer it takes to recognise.

I think we gave it 3 or 4 seconds- maybe it needs to read it, like you say.

Main thing I wanted to check was that it is supposed to do what I think it is- then if it doesn't work it should be a warranty fix (assuming it's broken!)

I would give it a lot longer than that.
As I said we didnt think ours worked but it just needed time to read it.

I had this problem : I tried it with a Transcend stick and it wouldn't work. I then tried it with a Sandisk stick and it worked fine.

Yeah, engine was still running - sounds from the above like we just didn't give it enough time. I've prepped a second one with some MP3's as well so I can try a couple - should be collecting the car on Friday.

It takes ages to scan and index the contents of the USB stick. Once done it's fine. If you have a 32Gb stick with a load of music on it expect to wait for a significant time (many minutes) before the head unit displays anything.

Perhaps look into a faster USB stick. I have a 128GB in with around 90GB used and it indexes in around 30 seconds.
