Myself and daughter are planning a driving holiday on the West Coast of USA to include the PCH, Grand Canyon, San Francisco, Yosemite, Monument Valley..all the usual stuff.
Initial plan is to fly to LA rent a car then head off, I've been to States previously but have never driven over there so has anyone got any advice on driving, hotels etc, what to do and what to avoid ?
Hoping to get a soft top Mustang.

Use Hertz. Great range of cars

Avoid the 405 on a Friday night. Or any evening really.

Try and get in Palm Springs on your way to the Canyons via Vegas and then Yosemite

That's a road trip and then some. I expect it' has changed a little since 1985, when I was fortunate enough to have six weeks training in Pomana. Fantastic place. Enjoy. 8)

I saw on the box recently that a lot of petrol (gas ) stations make you pay before you fill up..how does this work ? do you have to pay a set amount ? do they swipe your card then enter the amount after fill up ? anyone know ?

Hello,

See my thread here: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=89376
I did this trip last year, the best holiday we've ever done, annoyingly a lot of the photos aren't working on the thread?

Re. petrol, you go into the gas station, say that you'd like $40, pay and then go out and the pump will stop at $40. Actually what tended to happen is that I'd pay for 40 then have to go in and ask for change back again as the fuel is so cheap, even when filling a Mustang!
Worth doing a search for a 'Supercard' this saved us a lot of bank fees and we used it almost everywhere except for fuel. Worth having a credit card over there btw, especially for the hire car. I used Hertz btw. :)

Driving is unbelievably easy in the US. We go every year. I love their roads.
Remember that the petrol price is in GALLONS (US gals) so $40 gets you about 16 gallons. You'll only be getting 20ish to the gallon, but it's still extremely cheap motoring. Have a great holiday. Keep a collection of Quarters for tolls. You just chuck it in a hopper if you have the right money. It's always a combination of quarters.
