..get paid for each medal they win? $25,000 for Gold, $15,000 for Silver etc.....and they get taxed!

Question is, do the Brits get paid too??

I thought it was the 'Olympic body' that paid this and not the home country?

No, they get their picture on a stamp instead.

There was an article on this on the BBC website a few days ago

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19101429

Some countries are offering their athletes huge amounts of cash for gold with Singapore offering over half a million pounds.

Personally I think it would be better to put any incentive money back into grass roots development for younger athletes, as the gold medal winners will earn big money from sponsorship after the games.

Believe, the Dutch get €33k for a gold medal, don't know what they get for silver and bronze, well that's what I heard somewhere.

That's the way it should be for me, most of the Olympians are professionals anyway.

Suddenly taking something to get the competitive edge makes sense.

thats the problem with professional sport, it doesn't matter how you win as long as you win, its all about the money

From BBC:

Medals means money and without hitting their minimum target of five, British Swimming puts itself in significant danger of a cut from the £25.1m they have received over the last four years.

The £264m UK Sport divides between all Olympic sports is expected to remain the same for the Rio 2016 campaign, but with the likes of judo and canoeing performing well in London, they can expect a larger slice of the funding pie.

"UK Sport operate a very objective system based on your targeted medals and how many you achieve.

"The fact of the matter is that there are loads of other sports that are doing extremely well and there's a only one pot of a certain size," said Parry.

So I think people with gold medal will get more pay.

but surely if your particular sport wins no medals then you need the money to help develope

That great bloke who won the two trap shooting gold, had his funding withdrawn and was then sponsored by one of his friends, a member of the Dubai royal family......but now being sponsored by the UK again

I think we should have an unnatural Olympics for those that want to take PEDs.

It would be a right viewing treat to watch huge muscle bound freaks with pimpley backs performing almost super human feats.
